Her fingers tapped my wrists until they were just below my cheekbones. “Not too far out,” she added. “You’re not trying to hug the air. Close enough to protect, far enough you can see the hit coming.” She walked around me, boots scuffing. “Feet shoulder‑width apart,” she went on. “Knees soft. You’re not about to curtsy; you’re about to move.” She nudged my right foot back a half‑step and angled it slightly inward, then did the same with the left. “Weight a bit more on the balls of your feet,” she said. “You need to be able to move. Roots are for trees, not Lunas.”

Anna let out a sigh of relief, but I quickly changed the subject. "In the Slater family, we've always been fair. Since Anna made a mistake, she should be punished." I turned to her. "I heard that the second Slater rule states that if you were rude to your elders, you must kneel before them and apologize repeatedly. So let's follow that. Does anyone have an objection?" Everyone glanced at each other, but no one dared to speak. "That's great! Well said, Zoe!" Daniel nodded in approval. He even clapped for me. "We'll do exactly as she says. Anna, remember that each apology should be loud enough for everyone to hear. Only then will your apology be accepted."

"The floor is wet. You will fall." I didn't think they even heard me. Before I finished talking, Freya's bare feet slipped in the puddle of orange juice. She waved her arms, struggled to regain her balance. I rushed towards her. She went down and hit the floor with such a heavy thud that I felt my heart leap into my throat.

Her voice sounded alien against the night and for some time, the noise of the night animals went silent as they too wondered what had invaded their territory. "What is the matter my lady?" Shana who was in front turned sharply in panic to her mistress. "I think I stepped on something," Hazel said in pain. She was bent down holding her right foot in her hand. Shana got closer so she would be able to see what was going on. "You are bare feet?!" Shana exclaimed in a voice filled with more disgust than disbelief as she saw the condition of Hazel's feet. "I was in a hurry. I forgot to wear shoes," Hazel said as she winced from the pain shooting from her right foot.

I growled primally at her. "Oh no! Don't eat me!" she playfully screamed. Reluctantly, she pulled out of my arms and ran in the direction of the stables. She didn't let her wings explode from her body. Instead, her dainty ballet flats hit the grass, parting each blade with the softness of her shoes. I laughed, shaking my head as I chased after her.

The maids were called in at once. They brought a new tray of full champagne flutes and, under Leon’s mother’s direction, rearranged the practice path. Pieces of broken glass scattered over the polished floor, glittering under the window light like hundreds of sharp blades. Then they handed me a pair of high heels. The shoes were elegant, narrow, and far too high for training. When I put them on, I could feel at once how unstable they made me. My weight shifted wrong. My calves tensed. And the tray they set in my hands felt too light and too precarious at the same time.

Felza's POV FOUR YEARS LATER “Halo, Oh my God!” I yelled, dragging her away from the kitchen. She placed her small hands on mine, trying to pull my hands away, but I shook my head and halted, “Halo, what did I tell you about trying to make a dish?” she lowered her gaze, circling her toes on the ground, “and what did I tell you about wearing your shoes.” she tucked some loose strands of her hair behind her ears, smiling from ear to ear, “Mother, walking barefooted helps me walk faster. Walking with the shoes slows me down.” I facepalmed myself and sighed, “Halo, everyone walks around with shoes. You have to get used to it.”

Eva stepped back a few paces and cried, "Hey! What's happening? Why did you shift all of a sudden like that?" But then she sensed something strange, the ground beneath her feet felt different. That coolness you feel when a bare foot touches wet soil was gone. It felt more like she had risen, as if her feet had barely lifted from the ground. She looked down in bewilderment. What she saw left her in shock. "Oh, damn…" she muttered. Because what she saw was not two feet, but four large, pure white paws…

How am I supposed to sleep here? I slowly sat on the bed and ran my hands on the mattress. Gulping down my curiosity and fear, I stood up and set my feet on the ground. Instead of cold ground I felt something feathery rubbing my feet. I looked down and found a pair of soft slippers. Without any thought, I slipped into them. They are soft and I feel like I'm walking wearing feathers and I will fly anytime.

She bounces in time to her counting, and since she’s watching my feet, and I’ve always been the most well-behaved student in any class, I bounce, too. “Okay, now, start with your left. Heel. Toe. Heel. Toe. Tap, tap, tap, tap.” I heel. I toe. I tap. My feet are clunky wooden marionettes at the end of strings. “You’ve got it,” Ashleen says. “Now dip with your knees between the heel and toe.” That’s when it falls apart. My feet stutter to a halt. I’m already flushed and breathless, and now my cheeks are on fire.
