How to Catch a Mate
The tension between us stretched thin anger, fear, love, all tangled up until I couldn’t tell which one hurt more.
Then he leaned forward and pressed his forehead against mine. His breath was cold, but his voice was warm when he whispered, “I love you, Ash. Always.”
My throat closed up. “Then stay.”
“I can’t.”
He pulled back before I could reach for him. His wings burst from his back dark and glinting blue under the fading light. The gust of wind knocked me back a step.
“Krav!” I shouted, but it was too late.
He looked down at me one last time, eyes glowing like twin stars, full of pain and something I couldn’t name. Then he whispered, “I don’t want to hurt you,” and launched into the sky.
