“A life… And you just have to keep driving no matter what happens.” Back in my quarters, I unrolled a map of the forest to draw a safer route plan. The back mountain was our starting point but the journey after that was treacherous. I marked hidden strongholds like old cabins, caves and other places the pack rarely checked. I even pointed out some rendezvous points for my men to bring supplies or horses if we needed them. “Misty Forest,” I murmured, circling slowly over a point. “If things go wrong, that’s where we go. Too dense for Kieran’s wolves.” I finally folded the map, tucking it into my cloak.

I nod, taking a bite of my food as I think of a plan. “There are Fae in the middle and the large lake that no one knows much about.” I add, setting my half empty can on the arm of the love seat and walking to the chest once more. I open the hidden compartment on the side, Grace and Amelia watching my movement with curiosity as I bring out a folded sheet of paper and place it between all of us on the floor. Opening the paper, I reveal the map of the forest, it is outdated by about one and a half years but it is better than nothing.

The scent of moss and damp bark clung to them, every twig snap and rustle sounding like a shout. Kaelen raised his fist, halting the group beneath a canopy of pines. He unfolded a worn map Draven had marked, its creases deep, edges smudged with dirt. A GPS device flickered faintly in his other hand. His brows furrowed as he compared the landmarks. “This doesn’t make sense, Kaelen muttered. Draven marked the Ironfang outpost here, but the ridges don’t line up. A few miles from here, we're supposed to sight the forest where we pluck the herbs, but everything seems like dry land”

Since he was the one that made it, he even made it a point to indicate what used to be Sem, Niju, and the old Cinco. The Torrids and Savanna, that used to be Sem. They were nothing but sand and gravel, and soil. The map even indicated that the best hiding place would be through caves and it would be best to travel by foot, by wolf if you really wanted to get there quick. Torrids and Savanna weren’t that far apart. Plus, there weren’t enough trees that can be used to camouflage if you wanted to travel by wolf. Yohan had that place in the map colored orange and red.

Maeve Branches snapped beneath my boots as I raced between towering pines, following a path that did not officially exist. The moonlight barely reached the forest floor. What little made it through the branches broke into pale fragments across damp earth, exposed roots, and thick patches of ferns. I knew the route. I had memorized it months ago. The map of Blackthorne forest had cost me nearly everything I had saved. The trader who sold it claimed it had been drawn by an old patrol captain who served the Blackthorne Pack for thirty years.

At the map’s heart: The Grove of Ash and Light. None but Amryn recognized it. She’d seen it in a forbidden chapter of the Book of Endings, a chapter marked “Withdrawn by Request of the Flame.” She had memorised every word, every line, and now she understood what must come next. Two days after the map’s awakening, a raven came to the camp. No wax seal. No noble crest. Just a black feather, and a child’s scrawl on a strip of cloth:

No promises. Just three strangers in the same category. The Wildfold was not quiet. Every tree seemed to hum. Not with life, but with memory—like something had been carved from the island long ago and left it bleeding. Wind came in bursts, too cold for the humidity. The sky refused to settle on one shade. It shifted subtly, constantly. Pale violet, storm gray, then bone-white for a few heartbeats before bleeding into dusk-blue. We reached the first ridge before the island map burned itself into our minds—an echoing pulse that painted our current quadrant and marked the first objective.

Inside the cabin, new coordinates flickered alive on Luca’s screen, the last untouched node on the Firewall Pattern map. Latitude 66° 34′ N. Longitude 14° 53′ E. Between them pulsed a single word. FJORDHAVEN. Evelyn watched the line of letters with quiet dread. “He’s daring me to cross the firewall itself.” Adrian met her eyes. “Maybe he’s inviting you home.” The vessel turned toward open water, cutting through waves that glowed faintly with bioluminescent streaks, electrical traces, pale blue light born from the sea itself.

“Then let’s find her.” They continued searching for more clues…visiting hideouts hidden behind abandoned shops and old barns. Everywhere they went, the same story repeated itself…no one had seen or heard anything about a strange female wolf. By the time the sun finally began to dip behind the trees, exhaustion had settled in. Damon drove in silence while Mara leaned back in the passenger seat, staring out of the window at the streaks of light piercing through the forest. “Where to next?” she asked. He handed her the map Fen had drawn. “You said you know these towns. Which one of them is the closest to the ridge?”
