This is her home, she wants to continue playing on and on to remember her times with her foster mother. With a deep breath, she placed her hand on the keyboard, her chest expanding in felicity. “Guys. Breakfast is ready. Hurry up now.” While the 12 year old Lyla, 6 year old twins Daisy and Michael ate their breakfast, I fed the 2 year old toddler Theo his meal and remained starved myself for another morning. We are all living in this foster home together under the care of Hector and Selena Brooks. Well... Not exactly care because they don’t care about anything else than the money they get from fostering us.

I needed to know what this foster home would do to me if later they found out that I had no one and onbody was coming to save me at all. "Well then the foster home will have to left you go. When you reach a certain age, like when you are 21, and still no one has come to claim you, we will have to give you some money and you will have to get a job to start fending for yourself. After a while, you will need to leave the foster home and head on to your own place because then you will be an adult."

“And that’s part of what I want us to address today. Though, I already came to a conclusion and you have to follow suit.” Now this guy is really scaring me… “Okay… that doesn’t sound scary at all. What’s it you wanna talk about, huh?” I said out of curiosity. I didn’t trust this man a dent, because I knew what he was capable of. “Well, I’ve arranged a place for you. It’s called a foster home. That’s where teenagers like you, what word should I use for it? Bastards like you who don’t have parents, that’s where they go. And I already signed all the required documents for you to move there.”

“And what does tomorrow look like in that head of yours?” Aiden exhaled, watching the last sliver of sun disappear into the water, turning the horizon into a thin line of molten rose. “I want to start the program next spring,” he said. “The foster teaching initiative. Small groups ten kids at a time. No corporate branding, no press. Just a converted warehouse in Brooklyn with good light, whiteboards, secondhand laptops, and people who show up because they want to, not because they have to.” Silas’s thumbs traced slow circles over Aiden’s ribs. “You’ve been planning this for years.”

I obey and close the gap between us smoothly. “That’s great, Mamma … Yep … Completely … Tiamo anch’io … until tomorrow then … Uhuh.” He repeats his goodbyes and hangs up, beaming at me like an excited child. “My mother has found Sophie a place to stay with a friend of the family. Someone she trusts, I trust too … Long-term foster arrangement while it goes through the legal process, then a forever home if she likes life with them.” He’s grinning at me in a way that makes me equally ecstatic for her; the Carreros work fast.
