I ended up in the foster system. The first foster home seemed fine at first. They had several other foster children, all girls, and on the surface, everything appeared normal. But as time went on, their true colours began to show. The foster father was a violent drunk, and the foster mother, though less physical, was verbally abusive, berating us daily, drilling fear into us. We were merely bodies filling space in their home, a paycheck to fuel their own lives. But that was not the worst of it.

Tenley rambled as she drove. “I have never had siblings, and I didn’t have friends in high school. Everyone made fun of me for being a foster kid. Which was crazy because my parents made sure I had nice clothes and the best cell phones and everything. With all the money they received from fostering, they put towards me insuring that I had everything I needed. My parents have blessed me. That’s not the case for most foster kids. I’m looking forward to having a close friend for once.” I Turn my gaze out of the window at the storm and expressed my gratitude towards Tenley. “Thank you for giving me a place to stay, Tenley.”

I called out, hanging the dress back up on a hook on the wall. The door pushed open and my brother stepped into the room. He was already wearing his tux for the evening and looking handsome. I smiled. We weren't actually brother and sister, but as far as I was concerned we were. Bastian and I were both foster children. When I came into the system, Bastian was the one who took care of me. My foster family had done their best to make us both feel welcome and loved, but it was Bastian who was my real family. We may not have shared genetic material, but I couldn't think of Bastian as anything but related to me.

Four kids were all over the living room, running, jumping, and screaming their lungs out, ages six to nine. Zeal and her husband, Benjamin Strand, were the angels she found when she was looking for the perfect home that would be in charge of Star until she was ready to take him. They were understanding and honest with her throughout the process and have been her close friends since then. The two had been trying to have children for a decade and, having no luck; they decided to go into fostering, which they have done for the past five years. My mother's eyes shone with tears as she held them close, her heart overflowing with gratitude. "I can't begin to express my debt to you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "You took in a lost, scared child and loved her as your own. You gave her a home, a family, and a sense of belonging. I'm forever grateful." My foster parents' eyes welled up with tears as they hugged my mother back, a deep emotional connection forming between them.
