The vampire’s mouth stretched wide, revealing fangs that gleamed like knives, his gaze locked on my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the bite, the end. But something happened. A spark ignited inside me, a rush of heat flooding my chest, tingling down my arms and legs. It wasn’t fear—it was something else, something alive. My eyes flew open, and I saw the vampire’s face twist. The hunger vanished, replaced by confusion, then fear. His brows furrowed, his mouth faltering mid-snarl.

The whites of her eyes turned black and her body started to wither like a mummy’s. The woman slumped onto the floor, gasping for breath, her body twitching wildly before she finally laid still. The mist emerged from her very pore

Stormy immediately growled inside our shared mind. The vampire laughed softly. “He still hates me.” “Stormy knows you?” I asked. The stranger’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “Oh, very much.” I turned inward immediately. “Stormy.” Silence. “Stormy.” More silence. Then finally..: “I plead the fifth.” “You don’t even know what that means.” “Correct.” I closed my eyes. Moon Goddess help me. The vampire looked entirely too entertained by our conversation. Fuck can he hear what going on in my head. But how?
