* The story is told from a single POV, and it doesn't change over the whole book. A trivia bit that blew me away: I picked the setting rather randomly, and later on, I found out I set my ghost story a stone-throw away from where Lovecraft set The Dunwich Horror and The Color Out of Space. Those coincidences I love about writing. Okay, enough gibberish. I'm just gonna breathe deep and hope for the best. In the darkness, my foot struck something, and I nearly tumbled down the stairs. "What's that?" I caught myself as a heavy reek of blood filled my nose. I pulled out my phone to light the way. One glance and my blood ran cold. It was the fake officer's body. He was dead. My stomach lurched, and I retched. His eyes were wide, and he was slumped against the wall, utterly still. Blood covered him, especially across the chest, and his clothes were almost black. I must've stepped on his outstretched foot and nearly fallen. I fought down a wave of nausea, lifted my phone for light, and stepped closer to see how he'd died.

My mouth simply hangs open- my mind blurs as blood drips from my hands at the sight. Selene. Selene! Eyes of crimson peer through the darkness under the hold. Thin, long, dark claws elongate, scratching the wood as the creature emerges. A creature of skin and bones, of shadow and chaos. It stands taller than I have ever seen, switching from all fours to its two feet. It unfurled, fangs revealed as it growled. Drenched in blood, skin, and things only found within. Horror - complete and utter horror. I feel my heart give out. My soul leaves my body. Every man who sees it forgets the storm.

They were images of blackened houses, broken bodies, and trembling survivors murmuring in fear. “They said they saw… shadows with horns,” Eden whispered. “They said the shadows walked through fire and didn’t burn. They tore through flesh like paper. One old man said he saw a child disappear in the blink of an eye. There was no blood. No scream. Just… gone.” Sophia paled. Her fingers trembled as she reached into the folds of her robe and pulled out a tattered, leather-bound grimoire. She flipped the pages quickly. “I’ve read this before,” she muttered,. “Long ago. When I was a child. The signs… horned shadows, vanishing people, soulless fire. It’s not mortal.”

My head started tingling and before I knew it, I fainted. I woke up lying in a field, and when I looked around, all I saw was guts and blood. There were different dead species all around me. Not a single living soul. When I got up and started walking, I burst into tears. My friends and family were lying on the floor in a big pile. They were all so horrible to look at that it was difficult to identify them. There was, however, a missing person. Grrr I heard an evil growl behind me. I turned around at the precise moment when a claw fell on my face. I fell on the ground, and I saw who my aggressor was. Amon.

Dad grabbed the nurse, throwing her out of the room alongside himself. "Well-done, Emily, you have accomplished your mission." A sinister scent emerged, a wicked laugh echoing across the room. The once blue sky was now a mixture of black and white with the moon reflecting its radiant image. Wails filled the air as a ray of light fell from the sky, hitting a mountain on the other side of town. I groaned, wincing as my hand was scorched by the flaming book. The pages settled, words in red appearing on the pages. "Strigoi, Nosferatu, Jiangshi…"

After two days of high temperatures and intense boredom, he remembered the three books. Sam pulled out the one with the Mummy on the cover, because it looked the most innocuous. It was entitled the Ninth Pan Book of Horror Stories. He wasn’t the least bit prepared for what he found inside. The first three stories involved emasculation, murder and burning at the stake. In his fevered state Sam felt he was not only watching the characters’ suffering, he was experiencing it along with them. He flung the book at the wall and then hid it again, wishing he could burn it like Jinnot, the young girl in the third story who was burned alive.

Suddenly, an explosion vibrated the ground and when I looked up, a black smoke emitted in the air toward the hamlet. “Randolph!” A gasp escaped my lips. Grabbing my dress, I darted back to the forest and ran. My feet flew over dead leaves and stones as I scouted for the hamlet, the branches of the trees whipped my face and tugged at my dress. My heart thumped behind my chest as I zigzagged through the sparsely darkened forest. Suddenly, I arrived at the hamlet and the scene before me almost crippled me. Before me were terrifying monsters from my nightmares; lycans; as my father would call them; they pounced and ripped apart the bodies of my father’s men who have also shifted into their wolve
