Mia's POV I lock up the door of this old, abandoned house. Running for days because of the zombie outbreak. I find a room with bars on the windows. It looks safe, but then I hear a noise. Zeke stumbles in from the closet. He was bitten last week. His skin is gray and peeling; pus leaks from sores on his arms. He smells of rotten meat and shit. His eyes are milky white. He groans low. I retreat backward, holding my heart because it's pounding. I grab my knife but he's quick.

She watched through a crack in the wood, and saw just enough to see the mob racing down the aisle, seemingly right for her. “That way!” screamed the priest. “The vampire fled that way!” He pointed out the side door, and the mob rushed right past him, and back into the night. After several seconds, the never-ending stream of bodies fled from the church, and all was finally silent. The priest closed the door, locking it behind them. She could hear his footsteps, walking towards her, and Caitlin, shaking with fear, with cold, slowly opened the trap door. He slid back the curtain and looked down at her.

One slip, and the old man would be blinded. “All right!” Aidan cried at last, his voice etched with agony. “I’ll tell you. I’ll tell you.” Kyle let him down. The old man was trembling all over. He wobbled over to his desk and pulled out a leather-bound book. He flung it across the room at Kyle. “It’s in there,” Aidan said, his voice drenched with regret. “That address will lead you to Scarlet Paine.”

It was then that she spotted the ancient spell book her grandmother gifted her on her fifteenth birthday and hope sprung forth. “I can think of only one thing to do to keep ye from his grasp and, possibly, reverse -or at least lessen- the bloodlust ye have,” Agatha said with an anxious tone. “I recall seeing something in this book my grandmother gifted to me. She was a powerful witch.” “Please hurry,” Kira struggled to say in a voice that echoed with a male tone. Agatha grabbed the spell book and quickly flipped through the pages while she warily moved away from her friend whose emerald green eyes were displaying flecks of dancing red light.

She glanced toward the street where Rick was already questioning a homeless man who'd been sleeping in the adjacent doorway, then quickly retrieved the paper with her pen. The note was written in a script she recognised from her childhood, before she'd turned her back on pack law and ancient traditions. Three words in the old language that made her blood run cold: *The Hunt Begins.* Casie pocketed the note without a word, her mind already racing through implications she couldn't share with her partner. Someone was targeting humans with supernatural methods, and if the old families got involved, the careful balance she'd spent years maintaining would shatter.
