The team huddled closer, their fear palpable, but I couldn’t let them scatter. “Hold your ground. Watch the shadows.” A blur erupted from the darkness, a male vampire with crimson eyes charging straight for Hansel. My instincts kicked in. I lunged, tackling the vampire mid-stride, my shoulder screaming as we hit the ground. His claws raked my arm, drawing blood, but I pinned him down, my weight crushing his chest. I never got into the whole vampire craze, so all my knowledge of vampire came from my collection of Blaxploitation movies—in particular Blacula and Scream, Blacula, Scream. I remembered how that African vampire had howled and screamed when he was reduced to ashes after being exposed to the sun. I wasn't all that anxious to recreate the experience. I've been ashy, but I don't want to be ashes. I could see my own reflection, but could I shape-shift? Didn't vampires turn into bats or mist or something? He pressed play on the movie that I had come to realize was ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’...I wasn’t easily scared by horror movies but this one did make me jump and hide my face a fair few times. Each time I would jump, Niklaus would let out a small laugh, squeezing me slightly and shaking his head. I rolled my eyes each time—not everybody could be as brave as him. He didn’t need to pretend to be all alpha male and laugh at my adrenaline kicking in.
