"Just don't be afraid of me. If it bothers you, don't look." With those words, he seemed to dissolve into a thick stack of black fog. His face peered from the center and took on a horrifying, almost demonic appearance, with glowing red eyes and elongated features made of the same fog. Emily opened her mouth in a silent scream, but the only sound that emerged was an almost inaudible squeak. "Don't look," he commanded, his voice sounding like a haunted howl of wind. THE NIGHTMARE MASTER DIDN’T bother to dress me in some elaborate get-up like the other Nightmare Lords and instead just dressed me in a lab coat with a black shirt, black jeans, surgical gloves, a face mask, and sneakers. Those were the details he cared about, though it was the blood covering every inch of my clothes and exposed skin. My lab coat had once been white, but was now encrusted with red blood. My hair and skin suffered the same fate, though thankfully the face mask covered most of my face and the gloves covered my hands. Still, every time he gives me control, I wash everything off, scrubbing my skin until it is red.

I grab fur, muscle, bone…anything I can hold onto. “RUN!” I scream for the hundredth time. The wolf twists, eyes never leaving Catherine. And then… “What are you guys doing? Shooting a Hollywood action movie?” The voice cuts through everything, laughing. I whip my head around. Danny. Standing there. Alive. Oblivious. Annoying. He’s staring at me like I’ve finally lost my last brain cell. I open my mouth. Can’t he see this? Can’t he see the wolf? Can’t he see…

Why had he fled immediately after that? Was it true that those with the loudest bark had the weakest bite? What happened to Phantom's dignity? Right then, Darren let out a roar. "Damn it! That bastard's making a run for it!" He grabbed a branch and went after Phantom. "Mr. Gulley, don't go after him!" Cassian shouted, but Darren didn't listen. As it was, out of all of them, Darren was certainly the one who resented Phantom the most. Everstream had felt like a secret paradise hidden from the rest of society, but Phantom's actions left all the villagers living in constant fear.
