The glow sputtered under each strike, but it held.
“It feeds on fear!” Nyra shouted over the storm of unseen blows. “Do not answer it, do not let it inside!”
But Freya felt it. The cold brushes her skin, crawling beneath her flesh, pressing into her veins like icy fingers. It sought her, searching, hungry. Her heart thundered in her chest, fear coiling at her edges. And then, her fire answered.
It struck like a heartbeat, igniting her blood.
Her palm flared golden-red, and flame burst from her fingers in a stream of blinding light. The fire cut through the black, searing into one of the invisible strikes. The air screamed, an inhuman wail that rattled the ground beneath them.
