CHAPTER 8 ROBERTA’S POV “You’re a little late. That’s unlike you” Brandon said. I giggled childishly at him as I hopped towards where he stood.He stood brightly beside a tree with a big woven basket in his hand. His blonde hair shone brightly under the sun. “Well, I had to be extra careful around the stream”, I answered. He laughed and lent me his hand to help me step down from the rock I climbed. “I brought fresh fruits for our picnic”, he said, holding up the basket. I smiled and walked beside him.

Marriane strolled in, wheeling Grandma Hartley. “I brought you some fruits,” Grandma Hartley said, setting a large fruit basket on the bedside table. “Adrian said these were your favorites.” My gaze drifted over the basket, which contained one pear, apples, a banana, an orange, and a bunch of grapes. A slow smile spread across my lips. Adrian probably had no idea what my favorite fruit was. He must have walked into the supermarket and told the staff, "Give me whatever healthy people eat." “Thank you, Grandma.”

She was holding a basket of fresh fruits, and her eyes sparkled with excitement. "Hey, I brought you some fruit," she said, holding out the basket. "I had a great day today. I went to the market and got some amazing deals on some new clothes. And then I ran into an old friend and we grabbed lunch together. It was so great to catch up with her." I took the basket from her, trying to muster up some enthusiasm. But my mind was still on Bridgette, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.

the food seemed like the best option, the sun had just set and it was almost dark outside. I rummaged through the food basket to see what he got and I did a happy dance when I came across a bottle of cranberry juice, I swear at the rate I was drinking it, I’d probably turn into a giant cranberry tree or give birth to one. I wipe the corner of my eyes and nod, giving her a small grateful smile. “Your words… mean a lot to me.” She smiles back, patting the back of my hand. “I'm glad I could make you feel better.” I nod, blinking back the tears threatening to escape my eyes. “Nanny, can you help me make a basket of fruit? I need to take it to Brandon at the hospital.” She nods immediately and goes to get a basket and starts arranging the fruit. She adds apples, bananas, grapes, and small packets of nuts. She ties a ribbon around the handle.

You want us to feed her. I’m not touching that.” Cameron protested. “That’s ok, we don’t have to touch the fruits.” He said and with a deceptive smile he motioned for Beatrice to drop the basket on my lap, then he reached for my hair, which I had up in a short ponytail he gripped it, smiled at me and shoved my head into the basket pushing it deeper in. I choked on the smell of the fruits and the feel of the maggots wriggling against my skin. I almost puked but I had nothing left in my stomach to puke out.
