After a quick diaper and clothes change we sat all at breakfast. Daddy was feeding me my food when an amazing idea popped into my head. When he didn't look at me I stuck my fingers in the porridge and when he looked back at me I smeared it on his face. He looked very funny and I couldn't stop my giggles. Even Papa couldn't stop laughing. "Oh, so you both think this is funny huh? Well, then I will show you something funny as well." Daddy joked.

Mom grabbed a thick wooden stick and threatened to break Dad's legs so he could never run again. I stopped chewing my bread, lifted my mud-streaked face, and shot Mom an innocent yet cruel smile from afar. "Mom, if Dad's legs are broken, there will be no one to serve you anymore." My words swayed Mom. She cursed under her breath, threw the stick aside, and secured a metal chain around Dad's neck. "I'll break your legs after I find a new boy toy!" After Mom left to manage the compound, I tiptoed over and helped Dad down from the tree. Then I brought some leftovers to him. "Dad, eat."

“We’re not going to wait around to meet this ghost, so we all start jostling to get out of the tent. During all the commotion, the damn thing caves in, leaving the four of us trapped under it. “I’m not going to lie to you, I nearly pooped my pants. I don’t know about Jacob, but it was probably one of the most terrifying moments of my life. “My dad probably heard the commotion and came running outside. I still remember the chuckle he let out when we told him what had happened; a big belly roar,” he laughs. “I remember it, too. He thought it was the funniest thing,” I say, now also laughing. “Hey, you never really told us what happened that night?” asks Thaddeus, curious to know.

Jasper: (crosses his arms, pretending to be serious) Hmmm, I might need to set some ground rules, Dad. No embarrassing me at school, and absolutely no singing in public!

Dad said and winked. He proceeded to climb the stairs and he stopped. " I thought about getting a side chick, like a white woman." Dad said smiling. " I'm calling Mom right away." I shouted. " Seriously, she don't give a fuck." Dad said smiling. " Stop swearing dad. You're being a bad parent." I scolded him. " Chill, I'm just joking with that. I love my wife a lot." " I know you do." " But I can't wait to celebrate my victory about our bet, at least you will get your first knight job by talking to your mom to come down to New Orleans."

I added as an afterthought. “Well, yes, but there have been similarly annoying ones before,” Dad laughed, ignoring the second part of my sentence. “Remember the dog expert?” “True,” I laughed. “That was really funny.” I once dated a girl who thought she knew everything about dogs and wanted to train Theodore. I had a good laugh. “Laughter always helps—don’t forget that. Good night, son,” Dad patted my shoulder and headed up to his room. He was right—I felt better.

I could feel his sneer from the end of the phone. Well,one thing I like about my dad is his sense of humor,maybe that's why I'm so close to him. But,what he was saying surely wasn't funny. I could feel my hand tightened around the handle of my box. I just got out of a journey of three hours,and him uttering these words added to my stress,making me feel dizzy. "Dad,I.." Before I could complete my words,the line dinged, indicating the call has ended. Oh,what a stress!

I exclaimed and chuckled. He was laughing too as he told his story. "I know! After I said that, he and our old men stared at me for a long time. Then Papa cursed me in Español and stormed out. But I know my joke was funny because I saw some of our old men holding in their laughs. Mama heard about it and lectured me about it. Anyway, it was one of my funniest jokes to date." Imagine being a kid and joking in front of your father after he just killed a person. And then imagine being so mad you had to kill in front of your child and he just jokes about your face. I guess craziness runs in their blood.

I make a sound. "It is not funny, Dad." "I am not joking." He leans against the garden fence. Look at the plants we just watered. "When I was your age," he says, "I almost hit someone too." I turn to him quickly. "Really?" "Really." "Why?" He raises his eyebrow. "Because of your mom." I stare at him. "Mom?" My dad chuckles. "A time ago someone made your mom cry." I feel my chest get tight. "And then?"

he added while crossing his arms and pouting. “Oh c’mon Dad ! I know you love me so much and missed my pranks,” I chuckled and he instantly shot a glare towards me. “Yeah as if I couldn’t stay without taking a bath in God knows whose shit and tripping myself on my own shoes filled with fucking crabs and seaweed,” Dad X narrowed his eyes at me. “Hey ! Those baths are beauty baths and that’s not tripping, Dad ! It’s just that the floor needs a hug sometimes,” I said and by the end of the sentence, my Mom and Beta were coughing so loud to hide their laughter.
