He said and chuckled as he pulled me closer to him, "Hm.. Okay, this one. Knock knock!" I can already laugh at my own joke. Pfft! "Who's there?" He replied, "Hatch." Haha! I'm so hilarious, I'm a prodigy comedian! Haha!

"You laugh at my jokes because of how stupid they sound?" I nodded. "Yep! You didn't think they were hilarious, did you? I know a thousand people who can tell jokes, and you're not even among them." Magnus grinned. "You know why I tell those dry jokes, Astrid?" I shook my head. "No, why?" "Because they're incomplete without your laughter. Every time you laugh, you make the joke full because it is a joke." At first, I laughed, but then I frowned. It dawned on me that he was teasing me rather than complimenting me. I hit him on the shoulder. "You went too far with that one, Magnus!"

“I do not fall.” There was a pause. “No,” he said calmly. “You just look very funny while slipping.” The line went dead. I stood there for a long time. Then I began laughing again. Because if I did not laugh, I might start screaming. The televisions behind me kept talking. The city kept moving and for the first time in my life, I understood what it felt like to be the joke. But jokes can turn dark very quickly and I am very good at dark.

I struggled to maintain a cool head and thought of an appropriate joke to tell the class. Amy was the one to tell jokes. She told me hundreds all through grade school. Why couldn’t I think of one now? It didn’t matter if it was funny or not.
