Journals where I wrote down my feelings while creating each piece. I pulled out the oldest sketches. The ones from before Brock. When I was young and hopeful and believed in fairy tales. The designs were pretty but shallow. I didn't know anything about pain yet. Didn't know anything about survival. Then I pulled out the sketches from right after. When I was rebuilding. When every line I drew was an act of defiance. These designs were harder. Sharper. They had teeth. Then the healing sketches. Softer. More complex. Designs that understood both pain and hope. "It's not exactly 'showroom ready.'" She leaned over to get a look. He pulled the first page from the case. It was a rough but vibrant line sketch of a strong figure standing alone. I gestured for her to sit, “Let's see what you've got.” Diane opened her portfolio case, spreading a set of sketches across the table. “This collection is called Celestial Whispers. It's inspired by constellations and the connection between stars and human emotions. Each piece represents a zodiac element–Air, water, earth and fire,” she described. I leaned forward, scanning the sketches in silence. The designs were elegant, no doubt–intricate pendants shaped like constellations, gemstone patterns resembling night skies. I lifted one of the sketches and tilted my head slightly.

In just a few simple strokes, I captured the devotion and weathered expression on his face with striking depth. Jess kept flipping. One by one, she looked through my sketches. She saw an old man praying beside a prayer wheel, children playing beneath snow-capped mountains, an antelope with eyes as clear as the sky, wildflowers swaying in the wind… Each page overflowed with reverence for life drawn in vivid, lively strokes. There weren't any complex compositions or dazzling colors. They were just sketches. But the level of artistic foundation, the sincerity of the feelings behind them, and the raw energy flowing from them far surpassed that ornate, calculating work called "Duality."

As I opened the file, my eyes fell upon sketches of gowns that were unlike anything I had ever seen before. Deciding that this was a message from the universe to just go home, I was about to turn around, but something over the nightstand grabbed my attention, drawing me back inside. I paused by the nightstand, my hand moving the book, and taking a closer look. I flipped through the pages, studying it some more. “I have no idea what to send.” “Don’t worry. I’ve already narrowed it down to the top three options.” McKenzy pulls up a folder on her phone. “Option one, your abstract of the night sky. Option two, the messy self-portrait you made after that wine binge.
