He leads the way up the stairs to the room we were just in with the dead werewolf. He grabbed his notepad from his desk and flickered through the pages when he stops and shows us his drawing. It was a circle with 5 spikes making it look like a star. It kind of looks like a star with a moon inside. It is hard to describe. I don't really know what to make of it. A family. His gaze lingered on the third figure longer than necessary. “Very nice,” he said calmly. Silas pointed to the drawing. “I’m trying to figure out who this one is.” Victor’s smile held steady. “I see.” Silas nodded.

It looked ready to tear through anything in front of it. “You gave me cookies and built a dragon fort. So you’re a good Dad.” I reached out, took the drawing, and folded it into a neat square. The day flew by, I thought about Lila every second of it. The wind outside clawed at the boards. The fire in the stove cracked low. Gavin crawled into the blanket fort and peeked at me through the hole we’d cut with a butter knife. His lashes were thick, his cheeks flushed. Mabel, with a proud smile on her face, pointed at the figures and exclaimed, "This is Daddy, this is Mum, and this is me," as she tapped each figure with her tiny finger.

She joked, smiling at herself as she drew domestic animals on the cardboard. And for a minute, she got confused. It's obvious that her mum seems to be good at distracting her after all. Thinking about what animal to draw after a cat and a duck, Sapphire walked to the reading table by the corner of her small, pink room.
