Bella nods and says she’ll join me inside later. I hurry into my room, not to take my drugs, but to recreate that drawing from memory. Mine doesn’t look nearly as neat as the original, but it should do. Then I call Gypsy and Ky to my room to give them the update. The second they arrive, I hand over my drawing to them. Gypsy’s brows furrow the second he sees it. Then he looks at me, arching a brow. “I’ve seen this before,” he says, his gaze intense.

But whatever Nathaniel was trying to say, their conversation was interrupted when Alisa suddenly flashed a piece of paper between them. “What is it, baby?” Serena asked. It was a drawing of a... family. The drawing wasn’t perfect. The figures were made of uneven circles and stick limbs. Faces were little more than dots and crooked smiles. Yet everyone was holding hands, clustered close together behind a big house. There was a mom, and… a dad. In between were two youngsters, clearly representing Bastin and Ali. “Mommy, I made that too,” Sebastian said, pulling out his own drawing and flashing it to both Serena and Nathaniel. “Look, Daddy.”

I got you. Leonard stepped forward, one step, but the room shrank. “Give it to me.” Mason’s grin tried to come back, but failed. He flicked the drawing like trash. It fluttered to the island, landing jam-side up. The family stick figures stared back, happy sun, big hearts. On the flip side, someone had sharpied over my face with angry black X’s. Underneath, there was fresh ink written on it: ACCIDENTS HAPPEN.

Labels in wobbly, determined letters. *me* *mama* *stoRm* Noah’s mouth quirked despite himself. Storm. He didn’t need a map for that one. Underneath the drawing, mostly covered until now, was a photo. Not a printed one; a clinic snapshot someone had pulled from a phone and run through the ancient color printer. The quality was grainy, the colors too bright. But the subjects were unmistakable.
