I tried to run in other directions, but each direction I ran in seemed to have the bags hitting me hard. My face, my belly, my legs, my arms, every part of my body was attacked ruthlessly. I could not hear or feel them coming. Nothing was going to work out. “Feel the shift in temperature. Feel the speed at which it is racing towards you! Dodge, duck, and awake that instinct in you!” Bethel roared, but it was all futile. My face was a whole mess. I could tell, and just then something snatched my stomach with nasty claws.

I need to get out of here. Hearing movement to my left, I move faster, my adrenaline pushing me through the pain. I limp off again. Breaking into a jog, I hear my name being called from behind me, but it sounds close too fucking close. Not today satin. I push on when I see a road peeking through the treeline, finally I’m nearly free and can get the hell out of here.

I need to get the hell out of here. I forced myself to calm down. I didn’t want to pass out before I could escape. One thing these guys didn't know was that I was damn good at running away. And if I could get out of this room, I was gone. I didn't care if I had to hitchhike across the country, I was getting out of Dodge. "Not bad," I muttered as I inspected the door. I squatted and looked over it carefully. "Lock is old as hell. I just need something..." I muttered to myself.

I lied. “I’m not stupid, Amanda. You pretend to love me and be happy, but I can see your eyes darting around. You're looking for an exit through which you can escape. Let me make this clear to you. You can try to escape, but that is going to be damned near impossible because of how protected this property is, not to talk of the fact that it’s so far from civilization that you’ll get lost and die of starvation and thirst long before you can leave these woods.

Well, that person had used another word that Billy refused to say out loud. “Hold on, my love! I’m coming to you! I will save you from this nightmare and take you home!” Billy whispered again, stepping on the gas. “I swear that I will never leave you alone again!” It was raining so heavily that if it hadn’t been for the GPS system, Billy would’ve never made it to Pacific Heights. All of a sudden, the city seemed unknown to him. In that instant, the neighborhood seemed to Billy one big evil maze that was protecting that bastard and keeping him away from his love.

My other arm swept out, instinct pulling him behind me. Gun first. Body second. Rule of protection: Take the hit before they can. I stepped out into shadow, senses straining. Empty corridors. Silent halls. A single exit, already cracked open. No movement. No sign of pursuit. Not yet. “Move fast,” I said. We slipped through the loading dock like ghosts, hearts pounding louder than footsteps. My SUV waited at the far end, untouched, unmarked. A miracle I didn’t question. Not now. Keys. Engine. Doors locked. I peeled us out of that underground hell with tires screaming protest and adrenaline singing in my blood.
