I stood quietly with Chloe's urn in my arms. I just wanted to stay close to her. Then my phone rang. I didn't even have to look. Years ago, I'd given Richard his own ringtone. I answered. For once, he sounded hesitant. Almost guilty. "Selena, Grace's son was in a car accident. He's lost a lot of blood and needs a transfusion immediately. His blood type is rare. Grace isn't a match, and the hospital's running low. Blood from another hospital might not get here in time."

I began to chant as I felt the blood of Ares mixing with my own until I could feel his power coursing through my veins. I lift my hand and outstretched it until my long black fingernail was technically touching the barrier around the clearing. I watch as the tip of my nails began to bend until it melt. I smirked before retracting my hand. "Ester darling, I see you are not happy that I am visiting you today." I spoke and summoned one of my crows. This one name was Ghost, he had a liking for lost souls that lingered on earth.He could spot them quickly, something I have used him for occasionally when I want to suck some of the souls power. There is nothing more delicious than a wandering soul.

My phone beeps in my pocket and I take it out and look at it just before walking into the compound. Ghost: Here. She's asleep. I push my phone back into my pocket without responding. I had left Abby with Ghost since I was needed at church. Ghost wouldn't be the only brother missing today. Ghost was one of our prospects but was patched in a year ago. He's got some demons stronger than mine, but he's made amends with them. The kill with bare hands type of amends.

I was inside the network. It wasn’t code. It wasn’t data. It looked like a massive landscape made of flowing light. Three enormous structures dominated the horizon. Gold. Blue. And silver. The three networks. Legacy root. Helix. Atlas. But the structures were unstable. Cracks of black interference crawled through them like spreading shadows. The Ghost Protocol. I stepped forward instinctively. The landscape responded. Streams of light shifted beneath my feet. A voice echoed across the space. Not the legacy root. Something else.

There was fresh blood on the floor, but the animal didn't react. I took a shaky step forward, my heart hammering against my ribs. The wolf didn't turn. I walked closer, standing five feet away and holding my bleeding hand out. Nothing. I walked until I was standing right next to the bars, inches from the cold metal. The wolf threw itself at the cage again, trying to get to Declan. Its claws sparked against the iron. It ignored me completely. I was invisible. "You really are a Ghost," Declan said softly. He walked up beside me. He raised the knife again and sliced his own palm.

His strong arm wraps around me, and Rhia relaxes into something I can only describe as a purr. “I’ll take care of her from here, captain,” he says. I can’t take my eyes off this man, but I feel the captain’s gaze move from him to me and back to him. “Very well. She’ll be in B24.” His departure barely registers in my mind. “I’m Oscar,” my mate says. “Oscar Gaelehan from Ethercrest.” I shake my head. “I don’t know where that is.” “Oceana,” he explains, his voice deep and soothing.

In the moonlight, a woman in a white lace dress was kneeling on the stone steps of the chapel, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders trembling. She had no feet. Below her dress, there was only a swirling black mist. "I see her." Lorenzo let out a low whistle. "Two years ago, Marco put her in the ground right there. Her ashes are buried under the rose bushes behind the chapel." I didn't stop, walking straight toward the chapel. Giovanni froze behind me but didn't dare to call out. As I reached the bottom of the steps, the female ghost's head snapped up. She lunged at me, her face a sickly pale green, her eye sockets empty black pits.

Ghost simply got the job done. My jaw tightened. “The timing…” Nico nodded his head before I even finished the sentence. “That’s exactly what caught my attention.” Ghost had disappeared for nearly two weeks. During that same time, my security firm detected an attempted breach that nearly got through. Then Ghost vanished. Now Ghost was back. Ash growled. “That isn’t a coincidence.” No… It wasn’t. Nico leaned closer to the keyboard, his fingers moving quickly across the keys. “I might be wrong,” he said, “but if I had to bet…” He pointed toward the monitor. “I’d say Ghost took the contract job.”
