The words seemed to leap off the page, filling the room with an eerie sense of foreboding. Everything written in the book didn't make any sense to either Stella or Morgan. They found everything in the book quite absurd. The book spoke of witches, dragons, angels, vampires, and the devil. They didn't believe in such a thing at all, weren't they just fantasy? It was striped gray and black and had a lion-like mane that was only a little darker than the rest of the fur. It had a long tail with long hangings and a little goatee under its chin.

Floated up along the shore, their scales pale, eyes clouded, bodies stiff. All of them with the same odd discoloration beneath the gills—a greyish-green marbling that looked disturbingly similar to the veins spreading along the spines of the sick pack members.

the spirit mused then invited, "come over to the bookshelf. It's time we conducted a little research." Miranda rose her eyebrows in bewilderment and shook her head, "I guess." She sighed out, then she approached the bookshelf where the ghost started to point out which books Miranda needed to read. By the time Miranda sat at the small table, she had up to ten books piled on the wooden surface. "Now, let's start with The Legends of the Wolfe, then we'll read Creatures of the Moon, Myths Versus Facts, then we can go from there." The ghost coached.

The stench of rot hit me as ghouls wormed up out of the earth, their twisted bodies overflowing over mine. Claws dug deep into my flesh, their teeth snapping against my throat. I thrashed, a half-shift tearing my skin as bristles of fur came through, but the roots coiled tighter, crushing bone and my breath. My wolf roared, but the power faltered. I had no strength or fight. The ghouls' faces pressed up against my own, vacant eyes shining, their jaws wide open to devour me whole— And then a cry pierced the darkness. It didn’t sound human. Neither did it sound like that of a wolf either.

Some were made of leather, others of scales, and some in what might have been human skin. In the center, a pool of black water reflected no light. “The Library of Things That Were,” the ghost announced. “Every book here tells of the old agreement, the first prophecies. The Bridge especially.” Tamara moved to the nearest shelf. The books whispered as she passed, like they recognized her. “This one,” the ghost said, pulling out a book that looked like a piece of the night sky. “Start here.” Tamara opened it. The words weren't English. Weren't any language she knew. But she understood them.

I saw Eric as three of the beings tackled him to the ground and I concentrated on them first. “Brenna,” I said as I locked eyes with one of them and I felt the cold dread in my soul. His eyes were lifeless and black, his skin was pale like a corpse that had been dead for some time. His nails were long and he had fangs instead of teeth. ‘Watch out for their bite, that’s how they fight,’ I said in everyone’s heads. ‘What are they?’ Slade asked. ‘Ghouls,’ I said. We were on the attack and I saw the ghouls go down easily but to my utter shock they stood up again after a few minutes of being killed. The only ones that remained dead were the ones I had burned.

My ghost trembled on the verge of unraveling. I was dead. I'd been sold to the brothel, tortured beyond measure, devoured by dogs until nothing was left of me. And all of it—every last shred of suffering, every ounce of guilt I'd carried for "killing" my brother—had been one colossal, sick joke. A tidal wave of absurdity and bitter rage crashed over me. My spirit screamed in silence, howling, splintering apart. But when the crying was over, all that remained was a hollow, unfamiliar calm.
