I cry out. “Stop fighting it!” Callan reaches for me. “No!” Kieran spins me away. His breath is hot on my neck. “Break the bond, Nova. Before it breaks you.” The glass roof shatters above us. Shards rain down like diamonds. Callan's eyes meet mine through the falling glass. “Remember your promise.” Kieran's grip tightens. “Remember your pain.” The vine burns brighter. My vision goes white. “NOVA!” Both voices shout my name.

I don't bother signaling others. I pull back, my fingers trembling as I scoop up a stone from the snow. I hurl it hard towards the far end of the building. Glass shatters loudly. The chanting stops for a moment. Voices rise in alarm. I move quickly, smashing the glass with my elbow, ignoring the sting as it slices my skin. My breath comes out ragged as I haul myself up, my heart pounding so loud I'm sure they can hear it. I climb through the shattered window, landing on my feet inside. I'm at his side in seconds.

And the broken shards of glass were no longer on the floor. They were suspended in the air a few inches above the stone which was now looking amorphous and colorful. The sight of burning glass bits moving in the air was nothing short of a psychedelic experience. The next moment, the stone seemed to have sucked in all the glass pieces and returned to its normal boring appearance.
