Bedtime. Usually, this was Aurora's domain. It was her sacred hour, the time when the CEO vanished and the "Maman" took over. She would read Goodnight Moon or The Little Prince, her voice a soft, rhythmic lullaby that chased away the dragons. But tonight, Liam stood in the doorway. He was wearing a simple gray t-shirt and sweatpants, his feet bare on the plush carpet. He held a book in his hand. Not a picture book. A chapter book.

Jane. Tom was a lanky young man. He was very tall but quite thin. He had a beautiful sweet face and a very nice smile. The first time he smiled at me, I felt my insides warm up. His house was quite messy as it looked like a party of druggies had just ended. The house reeked of smoke and alcohol. It was no place for children but I had nowhere else to take them. His face may help ease the tension. “Sarah!!!” I screamed, but she just pushed me out laughing. “You can go in,” Mr Dave, his secretary, said. My palms were sweating so much, I could barely hold the doorknob. I took a deep breath and opened the door. “Good morning, Mr Blackwell,” I said, not attempting to look up. He didn’t answer me, but the next thing I knew was I was pinned to the wall. “So you think I’m only worth thirty dollars?”

“I never said you had to like it. You just have to respect it.” Richard grumbled under his breath but didn’t argue further. I could tell he was still upset, but he was holding back for my sake. I appreciated that more than I could say. Just as we were about to settle in for the night, the door to our bedroom creaked open, and a small figure appeared in the doorway. It was Tommy, clutching his favorite stuffed animal—a well-loved bear named Mr. Cuddles. He looked at us with wide, innocent eyes.

Graham the truth. Mr. Graham stood abruptly, his expression closed off. “I think I should leave. Fred, Bryan, Naomi? I pressed a pillow to my chest, trying to quiet the noise. I was tired of doubting good things, tired of wondering who was safe. But for tonight, I chose to believe. Even if it was foolish. Even if it hurt later. That small belief was enough to help me sleep. Or at least, I thought it would be. But when I lay on my back, staring at the ceiling, the night refused to rest. The hum of the generator outside, the barking dogs, the faint smell of my mother’s oil perfume, everything felt too alive. My thoughts wouldn’t stop racing.

The white shirt he had on was rolled up to the sleeves and there was a haunted look in his gaze.

Jane'll get you blankets. In the bedroom, Mark pulled me close. 'Tom's cool, right? Like old times.' 'Yeah. He's nice.' I kissed him goodnight, but sleep didn't come easy. Tom's touch replayed in my head—innocent, sure, but why did it stick?

"I don’t need anything. Emerson will be back later, and I’m just going to bed anyway. Please, just go away." Tom's gaze lingered on me, searching, questioning. I held my breath. Finally, after what felt like forever, he gave a slow nod. "Okay. I'm going to go." I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. "Alright. Thank you, and have a good night, Tom." He nodded, but his eyes stayed on me. There was something calculating in his expression like he knew something was off. Then he said, "Good night, Mrs. Blackwind."
