“You don’t touch her.” The thing tilted its head. “You already gave her to me.” The bond snapped—not broke, but stretched thin as a blade. I screamed as the child inside me cried out through the bond, raw and terrified. The thing took one step closer. And the floor beneath Lucas gave way. “Lucas!” The floor vanished beneath him. Stone cracked and collapsed in a violent roar, the tiles splitting like rotten wood as a sinkhole tore open at his feet. Lucas fell hard, disappearing into a cloud of dust and darkness before I could even reach him.

I could see the factions positioning themselves on either side like pieces on a board, and the board was tilting. I tried to stay upright but I couldn't.
