"The Ninth can have my soul. I just want her back." The descent was a nightmare of vertical miles. They used the rope until the rope ran out, then they climbed down the pulsing, vein-like ridges of the tunnel walls. The deeper they went, the more the physics of the world began to fail. Gravity became a suggestion. The walls began to whisper in the voices of people Elara had lost her father, her friends, even the versions of herself from the mirror world. “Give up, Elara,” the walls hissed. “The girl is already stone.”

Aliyah's POV My stomach lurched as I fell, the sensation of gravity disappearing as it swallowed me whole. I tried to scream for Skylar, for Tyler, but the gag in my mouth turned my cry into a pathetic, muffled sob. The fall didn’t last as long as I expected. I hit something hard, not stone, but a thick layer of moss that smelled like old blood and stagnant water. The impact knocked the wind out of me. I rolled across the damp floor of whatever we had landed in, my silver chains clanking against the ground.

I could feel my strength waning, but before I could relapse, I tried to send a message to her. “Tthbt book, holeidhjak.” What I typed was gibberish, as I wasn't in a position to type well. But I prayed she might understand. The reeds had pulled me away from my phone such that I sat in front of the hole. After one last struggle, I was pulled into the hole with a loud scream. I felt myself falling, with the forces of gravity pulling me down in every direction. I shut my eyes, not wanting to see how I would die.

"They begged me to let them clean out your room. Said it was time for me to let you go. That you'd want me to move on and live a happy life. I knew how much you hated someone touching your stuff. So I didn't let them. I did take Mr. Gruff; your stuff dinosaur. He sits on me and Aiden's bed. Has sat on my bed since the day you left me. At first when you left; I couldn't feel you at all. Then one day there you were. A little flutter inside my chest. How did you end up here?" He smiles to hide his sadness. He forgets I can still feel him at times. This is one of those times. Thanks to my keen eyesight, I can see everything far better than I expected. My mind drifts to something else. More likely someone else. A particular human. Is she going to pull an all-nighter today? Or is she sleeping? Maybe she is chatting with her friends, laughing and giggling cutely? Or is she- My thoughts are left hanging as the floor beneath my feet disappears out of the blue, and I find myself in the free fall of gravity. Before I can blink an eye, I land on a hard surface and hear Orlo and Dylan screaming my name in unison.

“Stride, darling. Like you own the floor, like every wolf in the room should thank the Moon Goddess you even stepped inside.” I tried. I really did. But on the second step, the book flew off, I tripped, and face-planted into Gregor’s chest. “Comfortable?” he asked, not even flinching as I dangled like a ragdoll. I shoved away, mortified. “I was testing gravity. It works, thanks.” Sugar was dying of laughter. “Margaux never would’ve admitted that. She’d say, ‘The floor just kissed me because it couldn’t resist.’ Try that!”

-HER- After some moments, I find myself peeking inside the well just like yesterday. A rough and cold hand pulls me inside before I am sucked inside the well by the gravity. This time, I fall willingly. I close my eyes and anticipate the fall. The sound of the wind whooshing past my ears is the same as that of yesterday. The sense of uprightness is lost. I can only feel myself falling before the ground makes its presence known to me when I feel it’s hardness under my feet.

Since the door was closed, there's no way I could open the door while laying on the ground. I tried getting up, but it was just so impossible. Whenever I'm atleast succeeding... Her father’s fragment shimmered nearby, trembling but alive, anchored by the delicate thread of Ava and Jace’s resolve. Suddenly, the floor groaned beneath them. Ava barely had time to register the movement before the ground opened in front of them, revealing a pit of shadows so thick it seemed to swallow all light. Cold, impossible darkness seeped upward, curling around their ankles, pulling at them, whispering, “Fall. Fail. Belong to me.” Ava stumbled, and Jace’s hand shot out, grabbing hers. He yanked her close, chest to chest, holding her as the shadows clawed at her boots. The proximity, the heat, the electricity of the near-touch, made her pulse explode.

-HER- As I continued to fall and fall into the pitch-black hole, I yelled at the top of my lungs. The strange thing was that my scream did not resound. I don't remember how long I fell, but it seemed like an eternity. As gravity seized me, I had my eyes tightly clenched and the wind was rushing past my ears. I had given up shouting because it didn't seem to help. However, at one point I felt someone restraining me and the wind stopped swooshing past my ears. I understood the fall had been broken, but how?
