THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA
He offers a small, tired smile.
"Mia," he says, his voice soft, almost a whisper of relief. "Thank God."
Mabel, distracted from her sugary prize, looks up at me, her big, innocent eyes shining. "Mia!" she squeals, and even though her voice is a little muffled by ice cream, it's the most beautiful sound I've heard all day. She giggles, wiggling free from Noah’s embrace, and runs towards me, her legs pumping. I crouch down, catching her in a tight hug, burying my face in her hair. I squeeze her, pulling her close, a desperate need to feel her safe and sound against me.
