"Are you here to see me, Hattie?" Whitney hadn't changed into her dress yet since she could be in danger even if she caught a cold. She was already wearing a thick, wooly everyday outfit. She was very skinny and her clothing felt unfit for her, and she looked especially weak. Heather smiled and said, "I'm here for the party tonight. Right, this is your birthday present." "It felt like someone injected boiling acid into my veins. My muscles locked up instantly. I hit the mud and couldn't move my legs." Turning a brittle page, I traced my finger down a column of faded ink drawings. "Did you see the vial? The color of the liquid?" "It glowed. Like a toxic, neon green." "Neon green." Flipping past a section on lunar cycles, I moved to the poison indexes. "Standard wolfsbane is purple or dark blue. Neon green means it was synthesized. Weaponized."
