I hated how quickly my mind arranged them beside everyone else who had watched from somewhere safe. Jesse squeezed my shoulder. “Forget I said anything.” That was easier to request than accomplish. We reached the maze entrance, where tall wooden panels had been covered with pine branches, ivy, and hundreds of tiny amber lights. Music drifted from somewhere inside, muffled by the thick greenery. A sign beside the entrance read: Find the moon at the center and claim your prize. Jesse studied it. “That seems suspiciously simple.” “Maybe the prize is disappointment.” “Then Ravenwood has spared no expense.”

Mason sighs but nods and rips open the wrapper of the protein bar before taking a bite, then he drinks half the water. He lays back in the grass and closes his eyes. Satisfied he's finally taking a break I start to set up the tent. It’s not as simple as the instructions make it look and I'm about ready to give up on it when Luke ports in with three more Greys. He directs them to the two who are still working on opening the portal and then helps me with the stupid tent. He makes it look easy as it pops up in front of my eyes.

AVERY'S POV: I bolted from the thicket, leaving the gruesome scene behind me. My pulse thundered in my ears as my bare feet slapped against the damp, cold earth. The maze loomed, suffocating in its enormity, its hedges closing in like walls of an unending prison. I didn’t care about getting lost anymore—I just needed to keep moving. I didn’t think about Axel, bloodied and monstrous, or the guards, or even the possibility of being caught. Survival had taken over, and every breath burned as I pushed my body past exhaustion.

“Alpha, this is base over. I read you loud and clear. What is the situation over there?” Kimberly cleared her throat and spoke. “I sight six huts down here. Some kids are playing around, but not signs of any hostiles.” “Alright. Stay put and keep me updated.” Oscar muted the radio and said. “I would not have been so enthusiastic about this mission if I knew we would go through all those hassles just to get here and sit our asses down.” Kimberly looked at the horizontal scar that ran across the man’s left cheek which was a constant reminder of one of the missions they had embarked upon.

Alexander asked, "Did you encounter any sort of maze after we separated?" If Green Dragon managed to navigate it and reach this point, it indicates his exceptional adaptability. Green Dragon shook his head. "No, I just kept going down until I arrived here. I'm more concerned about Elara's whereabouts." Alexander reassured him, "If you're fine, she should be too. Let's continue." The two went on together, breaking the monotony of solitude. As they emerged from the passage, they entered a larger cave devoid of branching paths. Alexander judged this to be the end of the forbidden land, a place where all those who survived the descent would inevitably converge.

Miles looks over at me as we're led to a barn away from the party. "Lead the way, beta partner," I smirk. "Are you going to scare some kids home, killer?" he says and pops the trunk. "I hope so," I laugh and climb out. The trunk is filled with packs of marijuana and coke bricks. A group of guys approach and start stuffing them in reusable shopping bags. Green for the weed, purple for the coke. I stay back with my hands in my leather jacket watching our surroundings. This place smells like hay, freshly cut pine, and blood.

Amber Alex, Edison, and I emerge from the maze world, coughing as thick smoke assaults our lungs. We are back in the living room, but something isn’t right. Everyone is coughing, straining to see through the fog, and then staring at us with wide eyes as if not expecting us to be there.
