As I drove down the street, I noticed he had gone unusually quiet in the back seat. "You okay back there?" I asked, glancing at him through the rearview mirror. He nodded, still pouting. "Want to hear a story?" I asked. His head lifted a bit. "Only if it's a funny one." I smiled. "Alright, once upon a time, there was a little lion who didn’t want to go to school. Every morning, he would hide in his blanket cave and pretend to be asleep." Jace chuckled. "But his mom, the lioness, was very smart. So one day, she put a cookie at the edge of the cave and said, 'Whoever comes out gets the magical cookie of bravery!'"

Damn if I didn’t still see her in pigtails, running barefoot through the yard, always trying to keep up with her sister. I eased onto the bench, cradling my lemonade like it held more than citrus. Yeah this was going to be pretty rough. One after another we went up and told our funniest jokes and yet there was nothing. Not a chitter, a chuckle or even a snort from the Griffons. We were becoming hopeless.

They hid the best leaves from him, and he was forced to eat rotten and dried leaves most of the time. "What story." "The story of the wolf coming. It said that there was a child who was guarding sheep. Because it was too boring, he suddenly wanted to call that a wolf came. Naturally, when the villagers around heard that the wolf was coming, they all hurried to help. However, there was obviously no wolf." "The second time, the child thought it was fun and did the same thing. The villagers were busy for nothing again." "On the third time, the child called that a wolf was coming again, but obviously, no one would help him, because everyone thought he was just joking."

’ He sniffled. ‘Maybe I can find a way to fix that, too,’ I muttered, scanning the pages of an ancient, dusty book I’d found buried in Moon Chasm’s library. I didn’t find anything. There were old fairy tales, so old they barely seemed recognisable anymore, that spoke of affronted gods casting down their children and making the first wolves. Some were classic tales, like the one about three pups going too near a river and being turned into toads to save them from drowning; others were cautionary tales, warning young wolves away from humans and forbidding any sort of romances between us and them – all in a fun, rhyming sort of way, of course.

“Story!” I couldn’t help but smile. “You want a story?” I asked, stifling a laugh. The children nodded excitedly. “The wolf story!” one of them exclaimed. “We want to hear the wolf story again!” How could I refuse? The ‘wolf story’ in question was one that I had made up yesterday on the spot, a story about a rogue wolf chasing a little girl. It was a scary story that had made the children gasp, their eyes wide with fear, but they seemed to love it.

"Really? And what stories does Mommy tell you?" Brandon tilted his head, thinking. "The Three Bears, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the Prince and the Frog." He hesitated a little. "Mommy knows lots of stories too, but she only tells me one each night, so she finishes them quickly." Peter grinned. "Is that so? Do you really like listening to stories?" Brandon nodded enthusiastically. "I love it." "Then, how about letting Grandma tell you stories from now on? Sometimes, Mommy gets very tired."
