Alex says, bouncing on the guest bed. “Right. Story.” I sit down, realizing I have, like, zero kid books. “What story?” “Mommy tells me about the brave little wolf who saved everyone.” I almost choke. “The wolf?” “He was small but brave, and he saved his family from the bad guys. And he had golden eyes like us.” Lora’s been telling him werewolf stories. Prepping him, but not scaring him. I end up making up something about a young wolf who finds his strength not in fighting, but in protecting those he loves.

She hopped from one exhibit to another, her small voice bubbling with facts she had memorized from books and cartoons. “Mommy, did you know giraffes only sleep for like, five minutes at a time?” She announced proudly, pointing toward the tall creatures nibbling at the leaves. Aurora tilted her head, pretending to be amazed. “Five minutes? That’s barely enough time for a nap!” Elara giggled, delighted that her mother was impressed. “Uh-huh! And they don’t even lie down most of the time. They just sleep standing up so they can run away if a lion comes.”

As I hurry back down the corridor, I see Gavin, our publisher, at the far end. He’s ushering an unmistakable forty-inch waist into the lift. As I’m watching, the Gruffalo turns and flashes a menacing anti-smile at me. He holds up four stubby fingers and is still doing so as the doors close.

Debra crossed her arms. Andrew's smile didn't falter. "Once upon a time, there was a shepherd boy. He was bored while watching his sheep, so he decided to play a prank. He shouted, 'Wolf! Wolf!' The villagers dropped everything and rushed to help, only to find out the boy had lied. The second time, he played the same trick, and again, the villagers came running. This time, they were furious to be deceived. Finally, a real wolf came. The boy cried for help, louder than ever, but no one came. He and his sheep were left to the wolf."

She patted his head like he was her oversized baby, repeating herself when Damian shook his head happily. "What's that?" He lay down, wrapping his arms around her legs. He moved her hand from her belly to his head. "Tell me." 'God, baby, your dad is jealous of you.' As she stroked his hair, she began telling the tale. "It's a children's story. You really don't know it, love? It's about a rabbit who races against a turtle." The book she was holding was a collection of classic fables-popular bedtime stories or early reading practice for preschoolers. The short text, accompanied by bright illustrations, made it easy for kids to enjoy.

Keith shouted while the police surrounded him and Martina left the kitchen. “Oh, poor Keith! I knew that your greedy wife would leave you looking at how rich and handsome I am! I wore expensive clothes and shoes to impress her. And guess what? I succeeded. She became a way for me to reach you! “A funny one, huh? Let me think.” I make a show of tapping my chin, and their giggles fill the room. “Once upon a time,” I begin, “there was a tiny wolf pup who thought he was the biggest and bravest in the forest. He decided he didn’t need his pack, so he went on an adventure alone.” Their eyes widen, and I tell them about the pup’s misadventures—getting stuck in a hollow log, tricked by a clever squirrel, and chased by an angry goose. By the time I finish, they’re laughing so hard they’re clutching their bellies.

"Mommy says daddies know the bestest stories." Nathaniel sat on the edge of the bed, feeling completely defeated from the little one. He didn't know fairy tales. He didn't know about talking animals or magic kingdoms. But as soon as he looked at her expectant face, an old memory surfaced from the depths of his own lonely childhood. In his low and soft voice, he began to recite an old story which his grandfather had told him. A story about a lone wolf who traveled across the mountains to find a hidden star.
