I turned my head, and there, standing in the shadows, was someone I recognized. It was my stepmother, Evelyn, her face twisted in hatred, her hands gripping a knife. She was moving quickly, coming straight for Hades. She lunged at him, her eyes cold with malicious intent. I tried to shout, to warn him, but no sound came. My voice was lost, stolen even. Time seemed to slow. Hades didn’t see her coming, his back exposed as he leaned down to comfort me. And then, before I could react, the knife plunged into his back.
