Dad's back was far more hunched than I'd ever seen before. By the time I made it 15 miles and halfway up the mountains, my knees were already bloody and skinned raw from all the "walking". The bowstring snapped with a sharp, metallic twang. The heavy shaft tore through the road mist, crossing the hundred-yard gap in a fraction of a heartbeat. The arrow caught the lead horse-archer cleanly through the throat, the iron tip splitting his steel gorget and throwing his body backward over the brass cantle of his saddle before his lips could touch the horn. The bay stallion screamed, its front legs buckling against the slick clay of the ditch, throwing the remaining two riders into a chaotic tangle of thrashing hooves and shattered leather.

Her eyes welled up with tears and to my surprise, she jumped into my arms, burying her face into my chest. “It was scary,” she mumbled. I chuckled and lifted her up into my arms. Luis came up beside me and we stared at the terrible state of the carriage. The horses lay on the floor with broken ankles. The carriage was broken down and seemed unusable. Luis bent over and stroked the horses nose with a grim look on his face. “We cannot use these horses anymore.” I exhaled and grimaced inwardly. “How much longer till we reach the pack house?” Luis went deep in thought as he placed a hand on his chin.

Emily jeered wild eyed. "Ronan's the mismatched half. The half you were supposed to marry. Well, it does have a nice ring to it, don't you think?" Jess pondered upon while Lizzy nodded at the comment and Anya simply blinked as it all came to her, all at once. At first she didn't quite comprehend with all the halves they were mentioning but then it occurred to her that twins were also called halves and couples were denoted as halves and that's the denomination her friends were making.

The sound of hooves hitting the ground was particularly welcome in this barren land as four large horses traveled the distance. Of the four horses, only 2 were carrying people, with the remaining two having no such task. Each of the horses carrying people carried two. Two men of contrasting builds and looks occupied one horse, and a young man and woman occupied the other.

Hezi’s hammer had been split cleanly into two halves! The rest of the men looked in disbelief! Many have attempted to cut the hammer in half, let alone any that left more than a nick on it. I raised my brow in wonder wondering if I had heard wrong but sure enough, two horses burst out of the corner Jamil had disappeared to. The horses pulled to a stop before me and raised their front legs, neighing impatiently as they blew hot air out of their noses. One was a brown mare with white spots while the other was a glossy black stallion. "Hop on!" Jamil grinned, extending the reins of the mare from atop the black stallion which neighed, raising its hooves even higher than it had the first time. "Horses!" I muttered silently, unable to believe my eyes. "You are not scared of horses, are you?" Jamil questioned, his brows furrowing when I would not collect the reins.

“Nothing more.” The stables sat at the far end of the zoo, away from the main paths. Only four horses right now, but Midnight was the one that always caught her attention. He was a big black Friesian cross, seventeen hands easy, with a temper that made most keepers nervous. Beautiful animal, but man, unpredictable. He’d kicked a gate once when a new guy tried to rush him.

Before I could respond, Mr. Harris returned—leading two massive Quarter horses; one black, one white. "And those?" I asked, staring at the horses in front of me. Richard barely glanced at me as he stepped toward the black one. "The trees are two miles from here. We’ll need to ride to get there." I furrowed my brows, glancing down at my dress. Could I even ride in this? If only he had told me we’d be horseback riding, I would have actually worn my jeans.
