One of the masked figures lunged forward. Kael sidestepped Lucien intercepted. Another came from the right Kael was already there. It wasn’t coordination anymore. It was instinct. Shared instinct. Spark sparked two of his fingers and placed it on the deep cut mark on his face and slowly it began to heal and his face was fresh as normal. Out of instinct, I leaned forward and knocked the chopsticks away, causing the avocado slice and chopsticks to fall to the floor. He looked at me in confusion. "Are you crazy?! You're allergic to avocado, are you trying to kill yourself?!" I exclaimed. He looked down at the avocado slice and then back at me.

Blade came out with his usual all black clothing—a big black sweatshirt, a black baggy jean, black glasses, black face cap, black sneakers— and a revolver carefully tucked by his side. To my shock, the passenger door opened and a girl came out. She was obviously young, probably fourteen or fifteen with red hair and a round hazel eyes which peered at me through the glass of the coffee shop. I couldn’t help but wonder who she was and why Blade had decided to bring her along. They both shared words before walking towards the coffee shop. “Emily!” Blade called as he walked inside with his companion right behind him. “I’m right here,” I said waving my hands in the air to draw his attention.

Spencer and the nurse prepared the defibrillator and poured gel on it.

I stagger, blood loss making the world spin. Kael’s voice cuts through it—harsh and broken. “DOWN!” I drop without thinking. The Heart lunges past me—straight into Kael’s blade. He drives it up under the monster’s exposed ribcage, both hands braced, the impact shuddering up his arms. The blade punches through muscle and bone—bursting out the thing’s back in a geyser of black blood. The Heart spasms. Screams. Kael rips the blade free in a savage, wrenching twist that tears half the ribcage apart.

She was already looking. The cardiac reading had gone irregular — not crashing, not yet, but the rhythm had developed an arrhythmia that hadn't been there thirty seconds ago. Aris had the implant partially exposed, the incision clean, the next step clear. And then the next step became considerably less clear because the implant's signal output, which had been high since the tunnel, spiked sharply on the resonance monitor and then went off the scale entirely. "It's fighting back," Lena said, which was not a sentence either of them had expected to say tonight.
