I tightened my grip on Giofré’s hand beside me before the feeling of his grasp suddenly diminished. Fluttering my eyes open, I felt the whole sensation of my body—cold and drenched from the rain. I was lying on the ground, feeling the mud covered my side. My vision was blurry and as my eyes started to adjust, everything became clearer. I witnessed the scene unfolding in front of me; the witches holding each others’ hands while chanting the spell, the wild wind brushing on them as they tried to prevent the dark soul from nearing them. Then suddenly, Lucas and Weston came running to their side, holding the gemstone as a witch took it.

Halfway across, my foot slid. I caught myself with a sharp breath, heart hammering. But when the beam tilted again, I toppled, hitting the damp earth hard. “Again,” the witch said without hesitation. I bit down on my frustration and climbed back up. This time I made it further before falling. The cycle repeated, fall, climb, walk, fall again. By the end of the exercise, my legs shook, my palms burned, and sweat clung to my back. “Focus,” another witch commanded the next day. A blindfold covered my eyes, pressing tight against my temples.

I look back up at Amy as she rips the binds from her hands and floats beyond the logs at her feet to the ground. The witch glares at the one beside me, the only one left, then the witch beside me disappears in a cloud of green smoke. The witch walks over to me slowly, moving the bodies from her path with a move of her hand. Once she’s in front of me, the chain around my wrists falls to the ground.

The second witch glared at her with indignant shock before quickly trying to bring up another spell. Kat lifted her hand and the lights in the hallway flickered as the air became thick and hard to breathe for the witch. She gasped in small hard breaths as she tried to complete her spell, a fire ball appearing in her hand as she glared at Kat. Kat had finally reached her sister, kneeling incapacitated before her. Kat reached out and grabbed the witch by her hair, wrenching her head up to meet her eyes as she grinned down on the hapless witch.
