Shapes and symbols danced where people should’ve been. As I twisted, I hurled the branding rod behind me—straight into Rowan. He roared from the impact. The next moment, I felt the pull of gravity. Chants followed, thick and heavy. They were trying to drag me down. Trying to weaken me. But I’ve had enough. I ripped my feet from the ground—blood gushing from my ankle—and shot toward the witch in front of me. But before I could reach her, lightning struck between us. Her eyes glowed red.

It was a black spotless one with a Phoenix engulfed in flames from its wings to its head.

Except that I did not completely fall, I however felt a strain on my neck and it took me no time to realize that the witch had caught me by the collar to prevent me from falling.

“The ice demands what it is owed.” The witch raised her hand, and the beams of the house began to groan. Huge shards fell from the ceiling. Caroline screamed as the floor gave way beneath her. I tried to leap toward her, but with a single motion the witch raised an invisible wall of ice between us. I clawed at the frozen surface until my paws bled, but the magic was stronger than my rage.

The ground rushed up to meet her, unforgiving. Her head struck hard. Darkness poured in like ink. Somewhere far away, a car screeched to a halt. A door slammed. Footsteps. Voices panicked, unfamiliar. “Oh my God, call 911!” “She’s not moving!” “Don’t touch her, don't touch her!” Nora didn’t hear them. Didn’t feel the rain that had started to fall lightly, speckling the pavement with cold dots. Didn’t know blood was pooling beneath her, dark against the road.

My head was ringing from the sheer force of the fall. Before me appeared the witch, her hair flowing up around her head, defying gravity. She was fuming, pissed beyond belief, with her sights set on me. She made her way toward me, but I shot fire right at her. With a wave of her hand she deflected it, actually deflected it. Not once in all my life has someone been able to deflect my fire. It’s always been able to burn through everything. Shit. Is this it for me? Will this be the first time I die?

All three women were already a mess, their clothes disheveled and their hair tangled. "Monica, you crazy woman! What the hell are you and your mother doing?!" Howard lifted the woman off the ground and held her in his arms, looking unbearably protective. Monica tried to kick them again, but several people held her back. Seeing this, Aunt Lorelei dropped to the ground dramatically, slapping her thigh. "I can't believe this! How did my good daughter end up with a worthless man like you?!" Before I could think any more about it, Sasha had moved forward while the witch was distracted and clasped her jaws around her throat. The witch was startled from her shock. The witch’s blood was dripping into our mouth and was leaving a bitter taste. The witch started moving her hands, and I felt Sasha’s clasp on the witch’s throat start to ease up. The witch was putting a spell on Sasha and before I knew it, I had fallen to the ground naked as the witch was bent over trying to catch her breath.
