A soft rhythm filled the air, blending with the saxophone’s tune. One of the men began to sing in a mellow voice, calling out my name and wishing me a happy birthday. I blinked, my birthday? For a brief moment, I stood still, trying to recall the date. My mind was blank until it hit me: it was my birthday. I had completely forgotten. Between surgeries, appointments, and Ava, I hadn’t realized the day had come.
Nikky stepped forward, smiling like a model walking a runway. She lifted a small white box wrapped in golden ribbon. “Happy birthday, my love,” she shouted, her voice echoing through the crowd. “You didn’t think I’d forget, did you?”
