“But you have to swear it. Right now.” Without hesitation, Bennet pulled out his wand and began murmuring an ancient incantation in a language I didn’t recognize. The air in the room shimmered with power as he finished the spell and declared: “I, the black wizard Bennet, swear never to harm Lucy, Rose, or Alpha Jack of the Blue Lagoon Pack. I swear to help Lucy win Jack’s heart. If I break this vow, may death strike me instantly.” As the final word left his lips, a black symbol appeared across his neck—a glowing mark that shimmered ominously before fading into his skin. The curse had taken hold.

he swore softly against my lips. “Promise me... please promise me...” “I promise.” BOOM! The dark magic inside his chest didn't just recede—it violently detonated. A blast of pure, kinetic shadow erupted from his sternum, throwing me backward across the marble floor. “Athena!” Buck yelled, reaching his hand out toward me as I slid through the dust. Before I could recover, four thick, pitch-black chains forged of shadow shot out from the mouth of the throne. They whipped through the air like striking vipers, wrapping tightly around Buck’s wrists and ankles.

Panicked. “Just a precaution.” I heard him move. I heard something metallic scrape against stone. “You’ve been so defiant lately. So determined to fight me at every turn. I thought it was time we had more… honest conversation.” A light flared. A single candle on the nightstand. In its flickering glow, I saw Sylvester standing beside the bed, holding chains. But they were obviously not ordinary chains. These glowed with a sickly purple light. Shadow magic mixed with something else. Something that made my skin crawl just looking at them.

Shadow creatures poured through the breach, followed by something that made my soul recoil in terror. A Shadow Lord strode into the chamber, its form shifting between dimensions. Behind it walked a familiar figure that made my heart sink. Lord Ravenclaw, but not as we had last seen him. His body was wreathed in shadow magic, his eyes glowing with borrowed power. "Did you really think it would be that simple?" he asked, his voice layered with unnatural harmonics. "That you could perform your little ritual without interference?" "Ravenclaw," Prince Kael snarled. "You should be dead."

"Got it. Though we had to outsmart some very annoying Pokers to get it." "Pokers?" Nyla raised an eyebrow. "Evil little tree creatures who like to trap people in pits and collect their bones," Dalia said with a shudder. "But we figured it out. Eventually." "What about you two?" Kaida asked. "You both look like you've seen ghosts." "Something like that," I muttered, not ready to talk about what I'd had to do in the Mad Mage's cottage. Maybe I never would be. Then Gretchen and Kai appeared. Gretchen's hair hung heavily with damp strands plastered across her face, and she was wearing what looked like a jacket over her shoulders, shivering slightly.

They could at least give him that much, right? Noah gazed into the darkness in front of him. “How long do you intend to hide in the shadows? If you want to employ me, you should at least show some sincerity!” After briefly pondering Noah’s words, Black thought that he might as well oblige. Putting his future host in a better mood would surely make these negotiations easier. Thus, in the space in front of Noah appeared a shiny crystal shard the size of a baby’s clenched fist. Most of its light blue, nearly white, surface was covered by a pattern of a darker shade resembling a circuit board.

Thousands of shelves stood rigidly at their back, seemingly shaking with the fullness of potions. George handed the crest—a square wood signed by the head-shadow—to the shadow who examined it with floating magnified glasses. He found it hard to guess if it could see, as it had no eyes. After about a minute of scrutiny, he was given a small tube filled with a dull liquid. Stuffing it inside his pocket, he was then assisted by yet another shadow toward the other ends of the hall where a dark portal stood. It looked like a radiating sphere, but when he stepped into it, he found himself turning rapidly, the air piercing his very skin until he fell facedown in front of the bench seated by the no-

she cried, rushing forward to catch me before I collapsed. "No time to explain," I whispered holding her hand, "We need to leave." She looked confused and still agreed, but she pointed at my neck. "The band around your neck." "I know," I sighed, touching the cold metal band around my neck. It was the only thing locking me here, the magical shackle binding me to this damn castle. "Can you do something about it?" Clara is a hybrid witch, and she is the only one who can help me at this moment.

Quinn hissed. The dark wizard turned to Sasha. "Get me my wand, girl. Let me get rid of this nuisance finally. I would be happy to break the news of your death to poor Albert." Sasha rushed in and came out with a black egg. She threw it at the dark wizard and we all wondered what she was doing. Was she helping him get stronger? "What have you done?" The dark wizard growled at her. I exhaled, loving the relief that swept through me. She really meant it when she had said that she wanted to be free of the dark wizard.

The other princes began to stir uncertainly, some standing. "Hold them," she said to Kingsley, who nodded once. A small black orb appeared in the palm of his hand. It began to spin slowly and then faster and faster as it grew larger, his hands manipulating the sphere. With a flick of the wrist, he threw it towards the table. It wrapped around the princes and their wives, binding them within the blackness. They screamed and fought, but it held tightly. The scent of sulfur burned in the air. "Dark magic!" the king yelled, his sword now drawn. Ishild stood, seeming to tower over him.
