It was how much of me it already seemed to own.
I closed my eyes, focusing on the words of the incantation. The spell was simple, a binding charm meant to fuse two objects together. The kind of thing Amber probably taught novices, something even a child could manage with the right guidance. And yet, every time I tried, the energy slipped through my fingers, wild and uncontrollable.
The objects I’d chosen, a broken silver chain and a smooth river stone, sat on the table, inert and mocking. I placed my hands on either side of them, letting my fingers brush the cool surfaces. My wolf’s voice echoed softly in my mind.
