“Why? What is this place?”
The woman stepped closer, the shadows parting around her like a veil. For the first time, Maya saw her face—or at least, what was left of it. Her skin was pale, almost sickly white, and her eyes were sunken deep into their sockets, as if drained of all color. A scar ran down the side of her face, jagged and unnatural, twisting her features in a grotesque manner.
“This is where people like you go,” the woman said softly, her voice carrying the weight of years of suffering. “Where the broken come to die. Where Kael keeps his... possessions.”
