Chapter 20 Echoes of the Alpha POV: Adelina McKenna I smelled him before I saw him. It hit me just past midnight, as I sat sharpening my blade outside the Hollow Moon stronghold, firelight flickering against the stones. The scent was older than memory pine smoke and mountain wind, metal and dusk. But it was weakened. Thinned with blood. Muddied with sweat, pain, and something else I couldn’t place. Fear. And we might not be too close to share, but you would be alright.” She faced a wide grin that betrayed the worries that glinted in her eyes. “Everything is just a phase; they all pass. She has to call Nadia and with so many people with super-hearing in the house, she needs to be careful. She walks a little away from the mansion and then calls Nadia’s number who picks it up on the first ring. “What is he coming for?” Asks Adeline with annoyance. “What do you think?”

“Adeline, come on!” Warm liquid seeps through Adeline’s clothes, and into the ground. I make quick work to press my hands as firmly as I can to the two holes in her body. The crimson liquid coats my arms in a matter of seconds, as the life drains out of her. “No, no, no. Please, say something Adie.” But Adeline stays still no matter how much I shake her. My vision blurs as my tears overflow, falling to Adeline’s cheeks, and that’s when I finally notice her eyes… lifeless and dull.

Adeline’s pov I tried not to cry again. This was something my tear ducts were used to, it was almost a routine to watch it dry up and so I sucked in the tears and thought happy thoughts. Thoughts that comprised of the good old earlier days. Looking back to the sequence of events which brought me to that house of brooding mystery, of sinister undercurrents and disturbing echoes. I sat on a wooden bench I had found as I became lost in thought all alone in the darkness.

And strangely, I didn’t feel any attraction towards her. I wasn’t sure if it had faded over time since it was a stupid infatuation or if was it replaced by someone more…important? I walked out of the manor and found the ‘more important.’ Adeline stood before the birds with a bowl of grain in her hand, and she fed them. The birds seemed to be flocking around her as if she was snow white. Her lips moved as she looked at one of them. Was she talking to them? I moved closer to listen in.
