Crash! Adeline flinched as the sound of shattering glass echoed from the other wing of the house. The sudden commotion pulled her from her seat; a storm was brewing, and she could already guess the source. In the hallway, a scene of domestic tyranny unfolded. Eleanor stood over one of the maids, her face contorted with a rage that aged her beyond her years. At her feet lay a mangled designer dress and a shattered glass, the floor a hazardous mosaic of liquid and shards.

In a blur, he was in front of them, ripping the dead deer off the table so violently it shattered the glass wall of the beach house. “What the fuck?!” he growled, voice coated in rage. My stomach twisted in knots at the scene. Blood splattered. The pungent, raw smell of dead flesh hung thick in the air. A few of his men had been feeding—right on the kitchen counter, the same damn kitchen that shared an open space with the living room. “We were only hungry… that’s all,” one of them mumbled, heads bowed low. Their fear was visible. They trembled like leaves in a storm. Of course they did—he was Abaddon, after all.

At the Hampton estate, Penelope stood in her closet choosing a dress when the bedroom door burst open. Adeline stormed in with a stormy face and dragged her downstairs. "What are you doing, Mom?" Penelope struggled. "Are you insane?" "You're the insane one!" Adeline hissed. "The Sterling family came calling, and you're fussing over your looks? If you die later, who will care whether you were a beauty or a pile of ashes?" "Madam Sterling is here?" Penelope's smile sharpened. She thought she had the upper hand. "Shut up." Adeline looked like she wanted to slap her instead. "If you die and drag us down with you, I'll make you pay."

Saw the blood drip into her mouth. “No!” Yvette screamed. The memory ripped away. She fell to the ground, gasping. The ghost of Adeline leaned over her. “You cannot undo the pact,” she whispered. “Only pass it on.” “No.” “Then she dies.” --- --- Yvette stood slowly. Her whole body trembled. “I will never give her to you.” Adeline smiled sadly. “Then take her place.” The room spun. The candles flared. Yvette collapsed into darkness. --- When she awoke, she was back in Cara’s room.

My heart stopped as I hit a hard moving surface. “Stay away from her! She’s perfectly lucid!” Relief washed over me as I registered the voice. I turned to see Rade. “The Kids are at the Hollen Mansion. The house was empty, Adeline took some valuables, and left. The police are looking for her and them?” He glanced at the nurses. “She hit a nurse and—“ “I’m sorry, I am so sorry,” I said, leaning against Rade. “It’s just… I… my kids and husband. I have no right to do that, I am so sorry,” I swallowed the sob in my throat, “I would never hurt anyone.”

ADELINE POV As I opened my eyes, I couldn't stop my tears from falling. It is now clear in my mind what happened in the past. The main reason I was in the Romanov mansion was because his wife, Adeline, helped me escape that night. I remember what happened that night in crystal-clear detail. When I choose to run away from an old man who did bad things to me just because my parents couldn't pay him their huge debt. He took me by force. I was abducted by his men, and I was raped. He made me his bed warmer and his slave in bed for several months. Something transpired that gave me the feeling that my whole body was filthy. Adeline’s POV It's been two weeks since the topic of marriage was laid out on the table and since then it's been quite hectic in the Carter household. There's been an obvious change in the atmosphere like everyone is walking on eggshells around me. I know they are being very cautious with words especially prohibited words, like Axel... I stare out of the window in the lecture hall and breathe out a sigh... A bit too loud... Wait. Oh crap the mic is on. Squeezing my eyes shut and then opening them again, I look around pretending like I wasn't the one who did that and just when I thought my plan would be a success, I take a second glance and see everyone staring, at me. Even the professor.

Everything was a chaotic mess. It was 4 am and I had just been, once again, blocked out by Delilah when someone kicked my door open. Looking over my shoulder, I found disheveled and groggy Adeline entering in haste. Her eyes were wide and she rushed straight in our direction in a hurry. Lucas rose to his feet, reached her with quick strides, and cupped her cheeks, "What happened, baby? Was it a nightmare?" Adeline grabbed his hands holding her face and whispered in shock, "Witches are not the only ones who can summon up the portals."
