Her red petals were described in every single book I had read and to say I was obsessed would be an understatement. Roses were so rare. We didn't have any on our backyard lawn but mama had seen them before. "They are the rarest and most unique type of flowers. I believe you will see one some day my dear and when you do, don't forget to adore its unique beauty and ironic nature" she would say. "Life is just like a rose my dear" she would begin soon after, readjusting so I was laying right in her lap. "It can be beautiful like a rose but don't forget a rose always has thorns, the sharpest of thorns. But you see that despite the thorns a rose carries it looks so beautiful and always stands out"

Nikolaus POV: “It looks so pure.” The softness of her voice was almost breathless, her little fingers hovered over the white rose, she was drawn to it. “Nothing is truly pure,” I muttered and gently nudged her hand away, reaching for the rose myself. The thorn bit into my skin,sharp, quick, bleeding,but I didn’t flinch. With my fingers immediately closing around the stem, a thorn pierced my skin enough to draw blood. Snapping and getting rid of the thorns, I handed the rose to her.

I made sure that the stems were not completely shaved off, retaining their original beauty, and I brush my thumb down the stem, letting one of the thorns cut into my thumb. “Is breathtakingly beautiful, regal… yet it protects itself with its thorns… but once you get past that exterior…”

“ ‘From now on I will protect you with my life,’ the serpent pledged and swirled around the rose neglecting the pain caused by the pricking thorns of the rose. I shake my head smiling at the flower, “I’m keeping them on, it represents Sorrell better this way. Beautiful and delicate, yet guarded and dangerous. That’s her to a tee.”
