Snorting, Donna turned her back on me and walked out the door and I closed my eyes, trying to calm my breath and think. My heart pounded in my chest like a relentless drumbeat, drowning out all other sounds in the dimly lit room. The chains that bound me were strong and unforgiving, digging into my flesh and restricting my movements. I could feel the cold, rough metal pressing against my skin, a stark reminder of my dire situation. Panic and desperation swirled within me as I surveyed my surroundings, searching for any potential means of escape.

His hand brushed my hip, trailing to the dip of my back, then lower still. “You feel their hatred. He crossed to the table by the bed. From a velvet pouch, he drew out a length of golden chain, each link glinting like fire. He held it up, letting the metal slip through his fingers until it chimed softly in the quiet. “Do you know what this is?”

I screamed. Silence. “I HATE THE BOND!” The walls didn’t care. “I HATE THIS ENTIRE PACK!” Nothing. Then, quieter, almost defeated: “…why does my heart do that when he walks in?” The chains didn’t answer. Neither did my traitorous heartbeat.

My scream was lost beneath the roar of the fire, beneath the howling wind and the pounding rain. “Eira!” His voice rang through the chaos, thick with fear, sending ice through my veins. The flames flared brighter, the heat unbearable, the walls crumbling into ruin.
