The pink goes first, and then the orange. I watch it happen from the outside of myself, the way the dying are said to. The sunset-orange scales along my flanks, the ones my father used to call my evening-tail because he said they reminded him of the hour just after vespers, dim to the colour of wet stone. Then the coral-red across my chest. Then the pale gold at my wrists. My scales are dying and I am still inside them. Below me, the water is the colour of closed eyes.

I looked at the scalpel that had broken in two and was dumbfounded. “Woo…”He lowered his head and nuzzled my finger like a child who had done something wrong. Finally, the scales were scraped off, but it took several scalpels. “Your scales are surprisingly hard.” I picked up one of the scraped scales, which, unlike fish scales, was not the same thickness, but thinning from the base. I need not be told it was the legendary tenth Alpha's grave. I went there as slowly as I could as if I was scared a skeleton would jump out of the grave. I looked at the grass, searching for where there was no grass. That probably would be where the scales were buried. I found the spot and began to dig it up with my hands. A blue cloth was revealed. I immediately shoved it out of the ground and unwrapped it. There were some turquoise scales in it. I took one of them and stared at one of them which I held in my hand.

My heart pounds in my ears as our eyes hold, our fingers slowly running though the smooth texture of him. I tear my gaze away from his mesmerizing eyes, looking at where my fingers touch. I'm surprised at the breathless note in my voice. "Are these... scales?" His voice is hoarse. "Yes." "Wow," I breathe, leaning in with sharp curiosity. "This is the closest I've come to seeing a full dragon." When next I lift my head, my mind blanks. Our faces are inches apart. My eyes trail down automatically. ZenWave was a well-known, high-end beauty clinic chain. A single visit there could cost tens of thousands of dollars. This gift was too generous. Evelyn subconsciously leaned forward and reached out to rest her hand on Agarez's sturdy arm. Soon, she realized she had made the wrong move. Agarez's hands were sharp claws like a dragon's, and his small arms were rightfully covered in hard, black scales. These scales were tiny and sharp, their edges glowing with a cold light, and Evelyn's soft, white palms were immediately cut by the scales just as soon as she laid her hands on them. [Author's POV] She stood up, holding her injured arm, and slowly limped along the path which leads upwards. The walls were covered with small scratches and scrapes as she climbed the steep path up to the opening of the hole. She looked up at the top of the rocks towering over her. They were dark grey, and looked smooth like marble. They sparkled under the light, like the scales of some strange beast she’d seen once in a book. But unlike any beast she’d ever seen or even read about, there was nothing alive behind these cliffs. There is nothing to be afraid of.
