I managed to ask, needing confirmation that this wasn't some figment of my imagination but a genuine request in the real world. A smile teased her lips as if she understood the perplexity I felt. She turned toward me, her hand reaching out to graze my cheek, leaving a trail of tingling sparks in its wake. "I'm asking you to mark me." Holy shit! I had never not believed in heavens and angels, but today, all my convictions were shattered. There existed no realm or inhabitants within it, apart from the one I beheld with my own eyes—Athena. She was my heaven. If I were to worship her until my dying breath, and then go to hell, I would not hesitate for a single moment.

My lips parted as I scanned the place. Pretty maroon pillows…. the books on the shelves… the carefully arranged shoes and even the posters on the walls… Why did heaven look so much like my old room in the Crimson Crescent pack? Bewildered, I sat up and looked around. Was this truly heaven? Or perhaps, I was in hell. But wasn't hell supposed to be nothing but fire? The door opened. I felt as though my heart stopped beating when I saw my mother's ever-smiling face. Wait… perhaps this really was heaven…

Then I remember I don’t bowl. Scott Dear Sarah, I’ve done it. I’m reading a poem that I know I should have read years ago, but it’s just so damn long. There’s a bit of Italian at the beginning that basically translates to, “Listen up,” and then there’s this: Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table; Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, The muttering retreats

, the chef starts his introduction, but I don't hear a word of it. He opens the first cart, and my mouth waters. The smell of fresh, delicious food fills the room. I stand, and without a word, I dig in–– fork in hand, ignoring the rest of the introductions. I'm starving. The chef smiles at my obvious enjoyment, and with a bow, he exits the room, leaving me alone with the carts. The carts are filled with my favorite snacks, food and a bottle of my favorite wine. Heaven. I finish up, leaning back with a satisfied sigh, before heading to the bathroom. It's just as stunning as the rest of the room–– spacious and luxurious.

She thought about herself up on the lawn, cutting into a fresh ribeye, sipping wine that cost more than most people made in a month. Then she thought about her daughter down here in the dark, clutching a can of expired meat like it was the most precious thing in the world, holding onto it with everything she had just so her parents could last a few more days.

A little too well-timed to have come from the sky. Grace Marks had said the morning clouds looked like angels hanging their laundry. And by then I was feeling a little like Grace Marks myself, because what woman on this good earth had ever gone madder? The rain was a little like they were marching. Carrying a coffin in a funeral parade. And I didn’t have the thought that it was my coffin until a dark crow landed to preen on the hood of Damon’s car. A good omen. Except a stout magpie landed by its side. Because father used to sing to me: one for sorrow, two for mirth. Three for a funeral, four for a birth. And this perfect pair of life and death opened their beaks in the spots of clear glass

They opened their arms, welcoming the heavenly essence, and the ground swallowed every drop that fell eagerly. The sweet azure of heaven mixed with the salty tears of awaiting mobs quenched the thirst that has been gnawing their throats from so long. The greedy horde begs for more and more unable to resist the shining pearls. The ponds and lakes that were left vacant for a decade now drank the aqua falling from the welkin. Small animals that have been hiding in the abandoned woods raced towards them, tumbling and falling in the way. The greedy saliva fell from their tongues and gut twisted, unable to wait to bath in the neck-deep solace.

I looked up at the glassed chambers and the colors and the image of Christ. And it was then i muttered the first words, calling his name. “Our father—” I cupped my chin to close my eyes. “My father, who is in heaven. Hear me, O Lord” And a heavy breath made it’s way out of me. To be continued...
