I breathed and withdrew my hand from hers. I have come to love Lucas with everything in me, leaving him for Catherine would be a difficult one. I kept staring at her until Lucas arrived. She had a can of cinnamon cookies she had baked the previous day so all she did, was boil some water for the milk. She added some fresh milk and two teaspoonfuls of honey before pouring them into two large mugs.

“I’ve had somebody ding-dong-ditching me all morning, and I just thought…. Well, I don’t know what I thought. I’m so sorry!” Helen, recovering quickly from the misunderstanding, waves her hand dismissively. “Don’t you worry about it, honey. I just stopped over with some muffins,” she explains, holding out a basket covered with a pretty yellow cloth. “That’s so kind of you,” I say. Normally, I’d just take the muffins and not bother fostering any social connections in this dump, but my loneliness and the hot dread I’d felt earlier urge me to ask, “Would you like to come in for a cup of tea?”

It was Helen. "Where are you?" she asked. "Almost to Pomona." "There's a Denny's there where we get off to go to the fair, remember?" "Yes. It's about two miles ahead." "Get off and I'll meet you there in twenty minutes. Ok?" "Sure. I'm hungry. Want me to order for you?" "No. I'll wait. Get started yourself though." I pulled off the freeway and parked at Denny's. A few minutes later Helen walked in. She was wearing jeans and a loose western shirt with western boots. Not at all what I expected.

Helen smiled, “You’ve misunderstood me. I’m only here on business for two days. I heard that you started a shop and I was hungry. I couldn’t decide on what to eat, so I came here to have a look. It’s alright if you’re closing, I’ll leave.” Her heart softening, Arianne asked, “What would you like to eat?” Helen walked to the front desk and picked up a menu. She glanced through it and chose two desserts and a cup of latte, “Just these. I hope I won’t take up too much of your time. I’ll just have my order to-go.”

Ruby and Helen exchanged uncertain glances. Meanwhile, Delilah walked to the door, casting one last look at the café across the street. Her eyes glinted with determination. If Sss... Café thought they could steal her customers, they had no idea who they were up against. "Helen," she said, her voice calm but layered with purpose, "I need you to start gathering information about Sss... Café and its owner." Helen nodded, a faint flicker of unease crossing her face. "Alright," she said, her tone steady despite the undercurrent of concern.

The man nodded and walked away. " Hey ladies, " Helen greeted as she pulled a seat for herself. She was looking good in her red blouse and blank pantsuit. Her big braids were packed stylishly on her head leaving some of them to float down her cheeks and neck. " You look, good baby girl, " Shannon greeted with a small smile as she took in Helen's appearance. " Thanks darling, " Helen responded with a winsome smile. " What are we talking about? " she asked settling down.

Leaving home, Zeb drove straight to Helen's office and greeted her once she stepped outside the building. "Hey, Helen." He smiled. "What are you doing here, Mr. Larkin?" Helen stared at him in surprise. "Was just missing you. You didn't have lunch, right? There's a new restaurant nearby—why don't we go try it?" he offered with a cordial look. Helen thought about it and nodded—she was just going to eat anyway, and there was no reason to refuse.
