Scout Victor's gaze wandered in all directions. Even though he was tired, Victor's curiosity made him keep pushing his steps. On the other hand, Scout Victor suddenly witnessed an unfamiliar sight. I extended my hand, ready to pluck it from the forest floor when a sudden movement from the bushes caught my eye. Before I could react, a puppet leapt out, its swift and fierce movements accompanied by a suffocating stench. The creature was upon me in an instant, its eyes gleaming with malicious intent. "Watch out!" Athena warned loudly, but it was too late. The puppet, like black lightning, pounced on me with a terrifying ferocity. The weight of its body pinned me to the ground, and I nearly lost my grip on the herb. Its claws dug into my shoulders, and its sharp teeth snapped dangerously close to my throat. I couldn’t let this puppet stop me—not when we were so close.

Even the scent trails had been masked with charcoal and fox piss to throw us off. One of the scouts whistled sharply from the edge of the ruins. I moved fast. We found him huddled beneath a half-collapsed barn. Young, shaking, blood on his hands but none of it his. A human. Barely grown. Maybe nineteen. But his mouth still curled in defiance. “Don’t kill him,” I said. The scout dragged him forward. He was spitting dirt, but the defiance didn’t leave. “You’re late,” he rasped, chin high. “We were gone hours before you even smelled it.”

Corvin went into his office and pulled out a folding table large enough for both of them to share. He set it up in the living room. Scout eagerly placed the tray on it before looking around the room expectantly, as if searching for something.

It was to give Adrian peace of mind and help him focus on his mission, but it had saved Harper's life. The arrival of Adrian, Liam, and Oliver had taken the scout's attention away from them. Had they not arrived when they did, it was only a matter of time before the scouts would have found Harper and Lily. The only saving grace that Harper and Lily had was that the scout's sense of smell was impaired because of the drugs. Although it gave them strength and speed, it dulled other senses like hearing and smell. That was what bought them time. It was a miracle, and the moon was blessed for it.
