With a lot of time left, our group decided to head back to the hotel earlier and have extra free time. Everyone disappears the moment we arrive at the hotel and finally, Ms. Wilson and the tour guide leave us. With spare time on my hands, I ran upstairs to grab my book and run back down to sit on the couch. The thought of being able to snuggle up into my book warms my stomach as I wait for Leah to get back. My thoughts get lost into the book, and slowly, I take no notice of what's going on behind me. I've fallen deep into the world of the South during the Civil War. There was too much going on in the book that I found myself vigorously flipping through the pages.

Pre-AP History is definitely my easiest class—unlike pre-AP Algebra, which makes me want to make a hole in my other eye with my pencil. So, while Mr. Nelson was talking about three obvious reasons that led to the American Civil War, I decided to try a little experiment. Since I was sitting in class, it was a little risky. There was a chance something might happen, but I was willing to take my chances.

Wow. I was drooling. It wasn't just a room with books. It was a sanctuary. Floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with hardcovers, a rolling ladder, a massive fireplace that looked like it hadn't been used in decades. The scent of old paper and leather hit me, comforting and familiar. I ran my finger along the spines. ‘The Art of War’, ‘Sun Tzu’. ‘Histories of the Roman Empire’. Biographies of kings and conquerors. Heavy stuff. Interspersed with them were fiction classics. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dumas.

I moved deeper into the room. The shelves curved inward near the back wall, the books older here, their spines faded and their titles worn to near illegibility. I had to lean close to read them, my finger tracing the letters carefully. “A History of the Southern Territories,” I whispered under my breath, squinting. “Wolf Genealogy: The Five Great Bloodlines.” “The Post-War Reconstruction—A Council Record.” I paused at that last one. Post-war. I pulled it free carefully and turned to the first page. Dense formal text, the kind written by people who wanted to sound important.

Too bad because I'd have worn one. He has two books on his nightstand. One is a business book that I'll admit sounds thoroughly boring. The other is Lincoln and His Admirals by Craig Symonds. I've read several Lincoln biographies and other books about the Civil War but not this one. I pick up the hardcover and hate the fact that my Nook reader is back in my apartment. I'd love nothing more than a good murder thriller right now.

He would have, right? I shook my head again and concentrated on the book placed on my lap. It was one of the British, historical romance fictions set during the World War Two. I had randomly picked it up at the bookstore and somehow felt myself drawn towards it. Sappy novel with mopey dialogues and dragged out bits, it still provided me with much needed solace.

Sitting at her desk Tuesday evening, Leesa flipped the cover of her history book closed. For the last half hour she had been studying the causes of the Civil War, but she didn’t think she was going to retain much of what she read. Every time she came across Abraham Lincoln’s name, her mind wandered to the popular book and movie about Lincoln being a vampire hunter. With all she had learned since arriving at Weston, she wondered if it could possibly have been true. She doubted that Lincoln had actually been a vampire hunter, of course, but she had once doubted her mom’s story about the one-fanged vampire, and look how that turned out.
