My family, the Volkanov's, and his family, the Mennetti's, have been rivals for hundreds of years, going all the way back to Prohibition. At this point, I'm not even sure what the feud is about. I know Trish and I are on the same page and all we want to do is bury the hatchet. But nothing is ever that easy. I must find about that conflict tomorrow. And what is with undersea? Vadas distracted me with an invitation for the first dance. We socialized for some time with various creatures presented there. I wanted to win a couple of dances with foreign ambassadors, to learn their people's opinions about this war.

The emergency broadcast system, usually reserved for hurricanes, blared through every TV and radio, revealing the existence of the supernatural world. Humans were scared, no doubt about it. But that fear quickly curdled into something far more dangerous. They started attacking anyone they thought might be a supernatural creature. Innocent humans, caught in the crossfire, lost their lives in a wave of panicked violence. What these frantic humans didn’t understand was that we had been living among them for centuries, undetected. Why on earth would they think they could identify one so easily?

We didn't want to get figured out. It was even more important that they not find out that we were witches now.
