BROOKE I hear the click of the lock as I turn my key in the door of my dorm room, adjusting my backpack on my shoulders and turning to start down the hallway. I’m on cloud nine- freshly marked, a permanent smile etched across my face. Heart full of love. Theo and I are headed home to Summervale for the weekend to tell our parents that we’re mates and join our pack for the full moon run, and I’m so excited that I feel like I could burst.

The reunion was over; the orchestra had packed away their instruments. The chandeliers dimmed one by one until only the warm lights above the entrance remained. Waiters loaded silver trays onto carts, and guests slowly filtered into the cool night, still buzzing about one name. Bee. No, Isabella Vale. Outside the academy, the air was crisp. Luxury cars lined the driveway. Drivers opened doors. Security guards escorted wealthy guests away. The Moretti brothers emerged from the entrance together, their bodyguards instinctively spreading out around them.

Zane Well. Today’s the big day. Homecoming: the first official dance of the school season. A celebration of school spirit, hormonal chaos, and spending an entire week pretending you don’t care about any of it. Except, of course, you do. Everyone does. Even me. Which is unfortunate, really. Because these things? They’re basically peacock conventions for people with too much money and too many opinions about sequin placement.

Mom follows me, and Coit closes the car door. The driver starts the engine, and we drive away. Coit and the servants wave at us as we leave. What I remembered was Mom crouching in front of me, her eyes bright and kind, asking, "Do you want to come home with me?" I nodded. She smiled. Back then, her smile was prettier than anyone's at the group home. But just now, there had been no trace of that smile in her eyes.
