One that is holding my hand right now as we walked towards the daycare entrance. “Mommy, I don’t want to go today,” Hope said, her tiny fingers tightening around mine as she dragged her feet slightly, her voice protesting in the way that made it clear she had already decided she would not be easily convinced. I sighed softly, glancing down at her, taking in the sight that never failed to warm my heart no matter how stressful my day was about to be, her curly hair tied into neat little puffs, her small backpack hanging slightly off one shoulder, her lips pressed into a pout that looked far too dramatic for someone her size.

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINE By 12 pm that afternoon, Hope Haven had transformed into a small village. What had been an empty compound barely two days earlier was now alive with purpose. The waiting room of Dr. Evans’ pediatric wing was a study in curated cheerfulness. The walls were painted a soft, non-threatening yellow. A mural of jungle animals playing jazz instruments covered the far wall. The air smelled of sanitizer and the faint, sugary scent of lollipops given as bribes. Aurora sat in a low vinyl chair, bouncing Hope on her knee. At fifteen months, Hope was a dynamo of energy—curls bouncing, legs kicking, babbling a constant stream of commentary that only she understood.

The peace she had once dreamed of was real, even if it was fleeting. “Mommy! Pancakes!” Hope shouted excitedly, her small face beaming with joy. He had driven a Mama's Jeep to pick them up and had also bought the entire park for that day. He was getting better at this fathering thing. He might as well be named father of the Month. Rafael flew down from New York. Ms. Stanton sent a gift that made me cry, a tiny silver bracelet engraved with Hope's name and birth date. Even Adrian came, bearing an obscenely large stuffed giraffe that Hope immediately claimed as her favorite. We had cake, which Hope destroyed with enthusiasm. We had presents, which she ignored in favor of the boxes they came in. We had laughter and love and the kind of joy that comes from being surrounded by people who truly know you.
